Job Summary

Under the general direction of the CAFES Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, the incumbent independently performs a variety of administrative, technical and analytical duties on policies and procedures to support the function of the CSU ARI at both the campus and system levels and the USDA McIntire-Stennis Program. This position oversees programmatic activities including: assisting the CAFES faculty with all proposal budgets and preparation, ensuring guidelines are followed and deadlines are met; preparing required reports for submission to the CSU ARI administrative office and USDA reporting, and providing pre- and post-award services for ARI and M-S projects.

Additionally, the position supports other research activities of the College such as review and approval of all CAFES external funding proposals prior to the Dean’s approval; monitoring all research-related time for faculty; assisting faculty in writing grant proposals, and providing faculty orientation training for all aspects of directing their research endeavors.

Department Summary

The College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) consists of 10 academic departments, approximately 160 faculty, 50 staff, and 3,800 students in 17 majors. The California State University Agricultural Research Institute (CSU ARI) is a state-funded competitive research grant program that brings approximately $1 million dollars per year to Cal Poly and requires an equal amount of external matching funds. The program centers on six CSU campuses: San Luis Obispo, Fresno, Chico, Cal Poly Pomona, Humboldt State and Monterey Bay.

Key Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn, standard policies and procedures in research administration and the CSU Agricultural Research Institute.
  • Thorough knowledge of or ability to quickly learn State, CSU, University, and Cal Poly Partners infrastructure, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to take initiative, plan, organize and prioritize work (multi-tasking). Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise critical judgment.
  • Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Three years of technical or administrative experience. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,000 - $6,583 monthly

Classification Range: $4,379 - $7,922 monthly
