Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Department Chair, and with guidance from the lead costume shop PAT II, the PAT I (Costuming) uses their ingenuity, technical abilities and knowledge of production goals and themes, to create and construct costumes from design specifications. Work may include preparing and drafting new patterns, preparing appropriate materials, selecting and reconstructing appropriate costumes from existing stock, creating new costumes from scratch, fabricating costume accessories, assisting with measurements, fitting costumes and making alterations.

The PAT I (Costuming) position also requires experience in repairing, restoring, proper cleaning, maintenance, and proper storage of costumes and accessories.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $1,812 per month - $1,950 per month

Pay Plan: 10/12. This position is on the 10/12 Pay Plan. The off-work months are June and July. Benefits and salary are paid over 12 months.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry to the first level within this classification requires one to two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production. This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.

Required Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to maintain a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community. Demonstrated history of and commitment to building and maintaining a respectful and professional work environment. General knowledge of methods and problems related to costumes and accessories including a wide variety of fabric types, weaves, and weights. General knowledge of historical periods as they relate to the costumes and accessories, and the ability to repair, restore, properly clean, maintain, and store them. Working knowledge of design principles and the ability to translate design specifications or drawings into costumes and accessories which may include preparing, drafting new patterns, and interpreting pattern directions as printed, including complex alterations and construction markings. Demonstrated ability to identify and appropriate materials and supplies needed for productions and specific projects, which includes preparing appropriate materials, including fabrics and accessories for each costume, and the ability to reconstruct costumes from existing stock, and create new costumes from scratch. Demonstrated ability and experience using applicable software packages relevant to costumes and accessories and to use standard features and technical aspects regarding production goals and themes. Demonstrated ability to use the patterns, methods, materials and equipment including experience with taking measurements, completing alterations, and conducting fittings for construction, reconstruction, and fabrication of costumes and related accessories. Working knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to costuming machinery, to include but not limited to home, non-industrial, and industrial sewing machines, and related sewing appliances (i.e. overlock/serger, blind hemmers, industrial washers and/or dryers). Demonstrated ability to assist with training and supervision of students involved in productions. Demonstrated ability to work in a busy environment with frequent interruptions and assignment to simultaneous tasks. Preferred Qualifications

B.A. in Theatre, Dance, or Theatre Arts with an emphasis in costuming or costume construction. Minimum 2 years working in a professional or university theatre or dance company. Experience with and around students of varying skills level and learning styles as well as faculty directors and production staff. Experience in draping and dyeing fabric. Experience with a wide variety of fabric types that have dyeing/laundering restrictions. Experience with Leather Stamping Tools, Dye Vat, Drill Press, Band Saw, and Ban Airline.
