    Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings to supportive housing.

    MISSION:

    DEFINITION:
    Operates a bus in transporting personnel throughout County facility grounds and on special bus trips. Occasionally operates vehicles to tow trailers and to pick up and deliver supplies.

    Essential Job Functions

    Operates a light bus carrying patients, employees, and visitors on a regular scheduled route throughout facility grounds and to other locations such as public schools and parks as directed.

    Gives direction and information, assists passengers boarding and departing the bus as required, and renders first aid when necessary.

    Meet and deal courteously and effectively with the public.

    Responsible for the service and regular maintenance schedule of the bus including the gas, oil, and tires.

    Inspects the bus for mechanical conditions effecting safety of operation, makes minor repairs and reports major mechanical defects.

    Cleans and washes the bus.

    Operates other automotive equipment to pick up and deliver supplies and to transport specially equipped trailers.

    Performs water and electrical utility hook up to trailers at destination.

    Participates in the moving of supplies in warehouses or other buildings.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Six (6) months' experience in driving a bus or a truck of over 10,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight*.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class B Driver's License with special endorsement for passenger transport vehicles is required to perform essential job-related functions.

    CERTIFICATE:

    A valid basic first aid certificate from the American Red Cross or another recognized provider .
    Required license(s) and/or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted, or your application will NOT be accepted.

    Candidate must attach a legible photocopy of their basic first aid certificate to their application at the time of filing or email to analyst at mbecerra5 @dhs.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar day of filing online or your application will be rejected. Recognized providers include but are not limited to American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Heart CPR, National CPR Foundation, etc.

    LICENSE INFORMATION:
    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    Candidates for this position may be required to take and pass a urine drug screen. In addition, positions in this class may be subject to Federal Department of Transportation requirements for commercial drivers which include pre-employment, post accident, reasonable suspicion, return to work, follow-up, and random urine drug and/or alcohol testing.

      • Class 5: 16,001 - 19,500 lbs.
        • Example vehicle: Bucket truck
      • Class 6: 19,501 - 26,000 lbs.
        • Example vehicle: School bus
    Heavy-Duty Vehicle: greater than (>) 26,000 lbs.
    • Class 7: 26,001 - 33,000 lbs.
      • Example vehicle: City transit bus
    • Class 8: >33,000 lbs.
      • Example vehicle: Refuse truck
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    Additional credit will be given to applicants that possess the following:
    • Additional experience beyond the Minimum Requirements.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    An evaluation of your ex perience and desirable qualifications based on your application information weighted 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be added to the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    Applications will be processed on an
    "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be added to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:
    Appointees may be required to work any shift , including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
