The Advanced Cleanup Unit in the Underground Storage Tank Section is seeking a motivated Assistant/Associate Environmental Engineer who can play a pivotal role. You’ll work with a diverse group of team members and stakeholders pertaining to environmental investigations, modeling, and cleanup of underground storage tank projects.

This position will be located at 1730 E. Elm St., Jefferson City, MO.

Assistant/Associate Environmental Engineer

  • Interpretation of data concerning the extent of petroleum releases in the subsurface (soils, groundwater and bedrock and application of engineering knowledge and standards.
  • Implement Department regulations, policies, and guidance in a consistent manner and communicate both in writing and verbally with a variety of parties.
  • Review design documents and work plans of moderate complexity from external firms and review draft document
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to the regulated community, public citizens, private environmental consultants, legislators, and others with regard to laws, regulations, and engineering requirements through in-person or online meetings, written communications, and presentations.


Professional Environmental Engineer

  • All the duties of an Assistant/Associate Engineer above, plus:
  • Review draft documents internally prepared by Assistant/Associate Engineers for accuracy and consistency and provide a recommendation to their supervisor.
  • Provide technical guidance to Assistant/Associate Engineers.


To be hired as a Professional Engineer, you must be registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri.

To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

  • Environmental Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods to protect and improve the quality of the environment and its resources; and to monitor, control, abate, and prevent pollutants.
  • Teamwork: Encourages and facilitates cooperation, pride, trust, and group identity; fosters commitment and team spirit; works with others to achieve goals.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.


Equivalent to those typically gained by:

  • Assistant Engineer - A bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline from an ABET accredited program and 0-2 years relevant experience.
  • Associate Engineer - A bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline from an ABET accredited program and 2-4 years of progressive relevant experience.
  • Professional Engineer - Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri with at least four full years of satisfactory engineering experience, as required for licensure.
