    The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation.     Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION:
    Performs advanced metabolic and advanced dynamic radioisotope scanning tests and associated wet laboratory procedures to produce graphic and numerical results for the diagnosis of pathological conditions.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Prepares patients for test, therapy or treatments and administers the proper does of radiopharmaceuticals to patients, by injection, inhalation or oral route.
    • Performs nuclear medicine procedures including, but not limited to lung ventilation and perfusion, myocardial imaging tests, gated images and renal studies, some of which include dynamic and gated tests.
    • Operates gamma camera for data acquisition, reconstructs images, evaluates for technical quality, and submits for physician interpretation.
    • Performs quantative tests such as coronary artery imaging, lung ventilation and perfusion, and myocardial imaging tests.
    • Performs and quantifies dynamic tests such as radionuclide angiocardiography including gated images.
    • Calculates, dispenses, and administers isotope dosages following established departmental procedures and appropriate safety measures.
    • Orders radioactive materials, receives radioactive materials packages, and manages waste disposal. Prepares, calculates, and documents of radiopharmaceuticals. Employ safety methods to protect patients and medical staff from radiation exposure.
    • Performs quality control of gamma cameras. Survey meters, and hot lab equipment regularly in accordance with department procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
    • Explains rationale for various procedures to nuclear medicine students, teaches basic operating principles of common laboratory equipment, and demonstrates techniques.
    • Constructs time versus activity histograms from a particular organ or region of interest, corrects for background, and determines the area under the curve.
    • Maintains records of equipment QC, inventory, procedures, doses administered, sealed sources and disposal.
    • Adapts new nuclear medicine procedures for routine use.
    • Performs metabolic tests including ferrokinetic, albumin turnovers calcium absorption, protein turnover, red cell survival, red cell sequestration, fat absorption and fat utilization tests.
    • Calibrates instruments associated with test, for example, by running control samples to construct curves for liquid scintillation counting.
    • Constructs radionuclide dilution curves for various cardiac chambers and lungs.
    • Performs data analysis of in-vivo tests utilizing data generated from scintillation probes or stationary imaging devices and recorded on tape or disc; plays back the study and selects a particular region of interest based on characteristics observed in the image; tests measures blood flow of the brain, liver and other organs, and collects test data directly from the patient or from storage devices.
    • Performs radioimmunoassay involving the quality control of a large number of patient specimens and the duplication of precise measurements and environment over extended periods of time.


    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    1) Completion of an accredited training course in nuclear medicine techniques.*

    - AND-

    2) One (1) year of experience performing nuclear medicine technological procedures at the level of a Nuclear Medicine Technologist I** under the direction of a qualified physician in a clinical nuclear medicine facility.

    LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATE(S):
    • Current certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist in Nuclear Medicine (AART-NM) -OR- Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).*

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    III- MODERATE: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION :

    **Experience at the level of Nuclear Medicine Technologist I in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Performs routine static and dynamic organ radioisotope scanning and associated routine wet laboratory procedures to produce graphic and numerical results for the diagnostics of pathological conditions.

    No out of class experience will be accepted.

    DESIRABLE QUALFICATION(S) :
    • Additional credit will be awarded for additional experience beyond the minimum requirements.


    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT :

    This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience based upon application information, desirable qualification, and supplemental questionnaire, weighted at 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION :
    Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    AVAILABLE SHIFT :
    Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
