    POSITION/PROGRAM INFORMATION
    Serves as a staff psychologist at the full professional level, by applying psychological principles in the following major areas: clinical, research training and consultation.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
    Positions allocable to this class typically report to a higher-level clinical supervisor and independently provide the full range of professional psychological services relating to the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and co-occurring disorders. Incumbents are responsible for selecting, administering, and interpreting various types of psychological testing instruments, and for providing individual, group, and family therapy. Some positions in this class may be allocated to a centralized, County-wide program that provides psychological services to County employees and evaluates applicants and candidates for County employment. The Clinical Psychologist II is distinguished from the Clinical Psychologist I in that the latter may receive technical direction and guidance from the senior-level Clinical Psychologist II.

    These positions require knowledge of abnormal, developmental, personality, and social psychology; theory and practice of individual and group psychotherapy; crisis intervention techniques; applicable legal and ethical professional standards; Federal, State, and local laws governing mental health services; principles of psychopharmacology and psychobiology; psychometric and statistical theories and methodologies; psychological research methods and experimental design; and the ability to establish positive and therapeutic relations with clients; conduct crisis intervention and make appropriate referrals; select, administer, and score various psychological assessments; design appropriate treatment interventions, evaluate results, and make modifications as needed; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, co-workers, management, and representatives of community-based organizations.

    Essential Job Functions

    Selects, administers, and interprets wide variety of psychological test instruments for the diagnosis and evaluation of mentally disturbed, emotionally or physically handicapped, or socially maladjusted patients.

    Performs direct patient care activities including assessment and evaluation by diagnosing providing individual and group therapy, and counseling.

    As a member of the professional treatment team, plans treatment programs and disposition of cases under treatment.

    Participates in professional staff conferences concerning psychological methods and techniques.

    Supervises and instructs trainees and other members of a multidisciplinary team in the field of psychology.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
    A Doctorate from an accredited college or university in psychology, educational psychology, education with the field of specialization in counseling psychology,or in a discipline deemed equivalent by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Psychology.

    Physical Class II - Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

    LICENSE: A license to practice as a psychologist issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Psychology.

    Desirable Qualifications:
    • Experience providing psychotherapeutic treatment to the mentally or emotionally ill.
    • Experience conducting psychological research and studies.
    • Experience collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
    • Experience supervising and instructing interns, residents or unlicensed clinical psychologists in the field of psychology.

    Special Requirement Information:

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based upon application information and desirable qualifications, weighted 100% and a qualifying Spanish/English proficiency test. The proficiency test will consist of speaking, reading and writing. Candidates possessing a valid Los Angeles County Language Proficiency certificate MUST attach a copy of the certificate to their application at the time of filing. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in the evaluation of training and experience and a minimum qualifying score in the language proficiency test in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION
    Past and present mental health clients and family members are encouraged to apply.

    Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

    VACANCY INFORMATION
    The resulting eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Mental Health as they occur.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
    Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
