    Tenure-Track Faculty Position

    College of Ethnic Studies

    Position :

    Department of Chicana(o) & Latina(o) Studies

    Assistant Professor of Chicanx/Latinx Arts and Social Practice

    Starting Date :

    August, 2024

    Minimum Qualifications :

    1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) or M.F.A. in Art and Social Practice, Chicana/o/x Studies, Latina/o/x Studies, Visual Studies, Art History, Music, Film and Video Arts, Studio Arts, Animation and Digital Arts, Performance, and/or closely related fields from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required at the time of application. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered; for appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/19/2024).

    2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

    3) Evidence of research in scholarly journals, exhibitions, productions, art dissemination, community engagement, and/or creative activities in Art and Social Practice, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, Ethnic Studies, and/or related fields.

    Preferred Qualifications :

    1) A creative practice grounded in community engagement related to issues impacting diverse Latinx communities, including women, Indigenous, Central American, Afro-Latinx, immigrants, LBGTQ+, and other marginalized groups.

    2) Demonstrated experience or potential for successfully teaching comparative Ethnic Studies courses involving populations that include Native Americans, African Americans, Chicana/Latina/o/x, and Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders in the United States.

    3) Demonstrated expertise in utilizing feminist, Joteria, and/or intersectional analyses, methodologies, and practices in the field of Ethnic Studies.

    4) Demonstrated experience collaborating with local community partners, organizations, and community members.

    Duties :

    The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

    The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses with a focus on Chicanx/Latinx Art at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor students, collaborate with colleagues in the College of Ethnic Studies, engage with community partners, maintain an active, creative research profile, and actively participate in continuing to grow the Department of Chicana(o) & Latina(o) Studies.

    Salary:

    Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience (anticipated hiring range: $82,008 - $85,704 annually).

    The College:

    As the second college of ethnic studies in the nation, the Cal State LA College of Ethnic Studies provides an interdisciplinary intellectual space that centers the histories, traditions, cultures, experiences, struggles, and accomplishments of diasporic communities of color, making connections between the local and the transnational. It currently houses three academic departments, including Pan-African Studies Department, Asian and Asian American Studies Department, and Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies Department.

    The Department:

    The Chicano Studies program at Cal State LA began in the fall of 1968 with four classes. Today, the Department of Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies (CLS) offers over 150 annual course offerings. CLS has helped produce alumni who are scholars, educators, politicians, artists, health care providers, cultural workers, and more. Our alumni, current students, and faculty continue to engage in scholarly excellence and public service, transforming Los Angeles and beyond. Our departmental identity is rooted in civic engagement, movement building, social justice, and scholarly excellence.

    * A United States (US) Equivalency certification is required for earned/awarded/conferred foreign terminal degrees. The US Equivalency certification is used to validate foreign studies by an academic credential evaluation agency and is evaluated on foreign studies and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from the United States. The certification must translate the information in English, and confirm that your highest terminal degree is US Equivalent to a US terminal degree (i.e., Master’s, Doctorate’s, Doctor’s of Philosophy).
