General Description and Classification Standards
Maintains the communications systems used within an assigned department. Duties include, but are not limited to: providing electronic technical service for all radio, telephone, paging and alarm systems and personal computers and peripherals; troubleshooting and conducting a variety of electronic, mechanical and electromechanical tests on electronic systems, subassemblies and parts to ensure unit functions according to specifications or to determine cause of failure; and repairing and maintaining electronic equipment. Supervision Received Works under very general supervision. May work independently or with other skilled or semi-skilled workers with responsibility for completion of assigned tasks.
Essential Duties & Responsibilites These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned. Installs and repairs a variety of electronic equipment including mobile radios and data terminals, alarm and public address systems, dispatch console, video monitoring system, pagers, portable chargers, microphones, personal computers and peripherals. Troubleshoots equipment failure; reads test schedule, work orders, test manuals, performance specifications, wiring diagrams and schematics to determine testing procedure and equipment to be used. Inventories and orders supplies and equipment and arranges delivery of equipment. Prioritizes repairs according to sworn and civil personnel. Converses with equipment end-user such as operators, police personnel, etc. to ascertain problems with equipment before breakdown and to determine if breakdown is due to human error or mechanical problems. Confers with manufacturers? engineers, technicians and others regarding testing procedures and results and to resolve problems. Substitutes for co-workers in temporary absence of same. Performs flexible unit assignments as needed in emergency response.
Decision Making Uses independent judgment and discretion in the handling of emergency situations, determining and deciding upon procedures to be implemented, setting priorities, maintaining standards and resolving problems. Leadership Provided Routinely provides work group leadership, guidance, and/or training to less experienced staff.
Knowledge, Skills && Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledges, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list. Minimum Qualifications ? Education and Experience
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
1 year' experience as a Communications/Electronic Technician required; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
Preferred Education && Experience
Vocational/technical school diploma in electronics, radio communications or related field and 1-3 years' of experience as a Communications/Electronic Technician preferred.
