The City of Newport Beach seeks a motivated individual to join the Community Development Department . Currently there is one flexibly staffed vacancy that may be filled at either the Associate Civil Engineer - Plan Check, Civil Engineer - Plan Check, or Senior Civil Engineer - Plan Check level depending on the applicant's qualifications.
SCHEDULE: - This position may work a 5/40, 9/80, or 4/10 schedule.
SELECTION COMPONENTS: - Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis. The recruitment will remain open until the position is filled.
- Virtual Interview: Those candidates deemed most qualified as reflected in their application will be invited to a virtual interview. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies in the Civil Engineer Plan Check series as they occur.
SALARY OF CIVIL ENGINEER PLAN CHECK SERIES: - Civil Engineer, Associate - Plan Check: $8,069 - $11,915 monthly
- Civil Engineer - Plan Check: $8,463 - $12,511 m onthly
- Civil Engineer, Senior - Plan Check: $9,324 - $13,771 monthly
CAREER PATH: - The career path for this position includes: Associate Civil Engineer, Civil Engineer, Senior Civil Engineer, and Principal Civil Engineer.
CalPERS: The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement Systems (CalPERS) Retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 11.5% of pay toward the retirement benefit.

Experience & Education and License/Certificate
Experience, education and license(s) and/or certificate(s) : A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Civil Engineer, Senior - Plan Check
- Experience : Four years of experience checking building plans and/or multi-phased structural designs.
- Education : Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, structural engineering, or architecture.
- License or Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
- Depending on assignment:
- Registration as a California Professional Engineer, Architect, Certified Engineering Geologist, or a Licensed Geotechnical Engineer, or equivalent.
- Possession of or ability to obtain an ICC “Building Plans Examiner” certificate within six months of appointment.
Civil Engineer - Plan Check
- Experience : Three years of experience checking building plans and/or multi-phased structural designs.
- Education : Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, structural engineering, or architecture.
- License or Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
- Registration as a California Professional Engineer or Architect, depending on assignment.
- Possession of or ability to obtain an ICC “Building Plans Examiner” certificate within six months of appointment.
Civil Engineer, Associate - Plan Check
- Experience : Two years of experience checking building plans and/or multi-phased structural designs.
- Education : Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, structural engineering, or architecture.
- License or Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
- Registration as a California Professional Engineer or Architect, depending on assignment, is desired.
- Possession of or ability to obtain an ICC “Building Plans Examiner” certificate within one year of appointment.
