College of Ethnic Studies
While the Department of American Indian and Indigenous Studies is being established, the successful candidate will select and be appointed to one of the departments within the College of Ethnic Studies.
Assistant Professor of American Indian and Indigenous Studies

Minimum Qualifications :
1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D., J.D., Ed.D.) or earned M.F.A. in American Indian, Native American, or Ethnic Studies, and/or other relevant interdisciplinary fields from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required at the time of application. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered; for appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/17/2023).
2) Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate level of a diverse student population.
3) Evidence of research in scholarly journals, community engagement, and/or creative activities in American Indian, Native American, and/or Indigenous Studies.
Preferred Qualifications :
1) Demonstrated history of working with American Indian or Indigenous communities, organizations, non-profits, programs, and/or Tribes/Tribal Nations.
2) Particular interest will be paid to candidates with scholarly and/or creative expertise with American Indians and Indigenous people in California.
3) Experience of or potential for successful teaching of comparative Ethnic Studies courses involving populations that include Native Americans, African Americans, Chicana/Latina/o/x, and Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders in the United States.
4) Demonstrated expertise in utilizing intersectional analyses, methodologies, and practices in the field of Ethnic Studies.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses with a focus on American Indian, Native American, and/or Indigenous people at the undergraduate levels and possibly graduate levels in the future, mentor students, collaborate with colleagues in the College of Ethnic Studies, engage with community partners, maintain an active research profile, and actively participate in building the Department of American Indian and Indigenous Studies.

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience (anticipated hiring range: $82,812 - $85,704 annually)

As the second college of ethnic studies in the nation, the Cal State LA College of Ethnic Studies provides an interdisciplinary intellectual space that centers the histories, traditions, cultures, experiences, struggles, and accomplishments of diasporic communities of color, making connections between the local and the transnational. It currently houses three academic departments, including Pan-African Studies Department, Asian and Asian American Studies Department, and Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies Department.

The successful candidate will help build the Department of American Indian & Indigenous Studies in the College of Ethnic Studies.
