Tacoma Water has an opportunity for a Civil Professional Engineer to join our Planning & Engineering Division. Your Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Deliver complex projects and studies through planning, design, and construction phases.
- Provide technical expertise on the design of pipes, pump stations, flow control facilities, large-diameter pipeline replacement, and other pipeline-related projects.
- Lead cross-functional project teams (internal and external staff) and collaborate with stakeholders for the development and sealing/stamping of project deliverables, including engineering plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
- Apply project management skills during initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling, and closing of projects, including development of project management plans, business case evaluations, project scopes, schedules, budgets, and technical reports.
- Support construction with timely responses to submittals, request for information (RFI), and change order documents.
- Communicate Tacoma Water’s interests with internal and external stakeholders, including on projects led by other municipalities, agencies, or entities.
- Prepare project documents and conduct presentations to the public, Utility Board, or City Council.
- Develop procurement documents for selecting and awarding professional services.
- Direct and review the deliverables of consultants, including engineering drawings, technical specifications, reports, and cost estimates.
- Provide mentorship and coaching to junior staff.

Serve on a team supporting the
Pipeline No. 1 (P1) Program. P1 is a 27-mile large-diameter (30-inch to 78-inch) transmission water main that is the primary water supply for the Greater Tacoma Area. Under a regulatory-compliance decree from the Health Department, P1 is required to be rehabilitated to improve water-quality. The project will cost upwards of $225M and is intended to provide water supply to the community for the foreseeable future, while protecting the environment and minimizing the financial burden to our customers.
Serve on a team supporting the
Main Replacement Program (MRP) that is responsible for identifying, designing, and constructing distribution water mains throughout our service area of 7 municipalities and 2 counties. The distribution system consists of small-diameter (4-inch to 24-inch) water mains that provide water to our customers.
Who you will be working with:You will be joining our Planning & Engineering (P&E) Section, responsible for performing planning and engineering services related to the following:
- Regional transmission of water supply through 150 miles of large-diameter water mains, pumping stations, standpipes, and reservoirs.
- Local water distribution to our customers through over 1,350 miles of small-diameter water mains.
- Water supply forecasting and resourcing.
- Water quality, water treatment and regulatory compliance of the 150 million-gallons-per-day Green River Filtration Facility, in-town groundwater systems, and throughout the distribution system.
- Equipment related to electrical components, communications, instrumentation and control, and cathodic protection.
Your Team:
The Engineering Team within the P&E Section is responsible for the design and project management of construction projects at Tacoma Water, from planning to commissioning. You will lead a cross-functional team consisting of engineers, technicians, and construction professionals.
Qualifications
Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or directly related field.
Minimum Experience*
4 years of professional level engineering experience
*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
- Washington State Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to obtain within 6 months
- Washington State Driver's License or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Desired Qualifications - Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
- Technical background in large-diameter pipelines and/or water distribution systems
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Position may require driving, sitting, standing, walking, or climbing for long periods of time.
- Work performed in office, field, and other environments.
Telework/Remote Work
