The Public Health Nutritionist II (PHN II) is the journey level position within this classification and performs with more independence of action within established guidelines. The PHN II oversees operations and personnel functions at an assigned site(s). This individual plans, develops, implements, provides and evaluates nutrition activities for the general public, and in particular for low-income, pregnant and breast-feeding women, infants and children under the age of five who are classified as a nutritional or medical risk. This position is subject to overtime, standby, and callback assignments. Performs related duties as assigned.
Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Community & Health Services bargaining unit for labor relations purposes.
Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months.
Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

- Select and develop nutrition and consumer education materials appropriate to the Women, Infants and Children's Program (WIC);
- Prepare monthly schedules for the WIC Program;
- Implement special projects such as, Breastfeeding, Nutrition Services Plan, Training, and Quality Assurance;
- Plan and provide in-services education in nutrition to WIC, medical and nursing staff and community agencies in conjunction with the Program Coordinator;
- Develop a and conduct nutritional education classes for WIC participants and the community;
- Plan and participate in WIC outreach activities in recruitment of participants and program publicity;
- Prepare nutritional assessments and high risk care plans on referred clients including therapeutic formula prescriptions;
- Counsel according to plans and provide for appropriate follow-up;
- Complete certifications and re-certifications for WIC participants as needed; and
- Work at WIC sites as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience) SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Understand technical medical and occupational terminology;
- Plan and supervise the preparation of specific diets and menus to meet the appropriate mineral, vitamin and caloric requirements;
- Modify regular diets to meet the particular needs of the patient's condition;
- Communicate thoughts orally sufficient to counsel and instruct clients and the general public;
- Provide continuing education to medical, nursing and support staff;
- Maintain records of food served and diets prepared; and
- Prepare training and instructional materials for clients and the medical and nursing staff.

- Modern principles and practices of dietetics with special emphasis on diet therapy;
- Health precautions necessary in large scale food preparation and services;
- Food preparation and food service management methods and techniques;
- Chemistry, caloric values and physical properties of foodstuffs, as well as understanding the medical basis for dietetic restrictions;
- Normal, infant, prenatal and therapeutic nutrition;
- Behavior modification techniques; and
- Roles and responsibilities of community health care agencies and related health professionals.
- Professional registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
IN ADDITION TO PATTERN I OR II
- Eligible for registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration with plans to take and pass the dietetic registration exam within twelve (12) months of hire.
- Possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License.
NOTE: Registration consists of completing an approved internship or Master's program and passing an exam. (All approved by the American Dietetic Association).

TENTATIVE RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE

- Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
- Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
- Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months, but may be extended up to eighteen months.
