The Animal Science department in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo, California, is seeking a full-time, academic year, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor, One Health starting September 14, 2023 or January 8, 2024. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. We strive to prepare undergraduate and graduate students to address present and future challenges in animal science disciplines as they pertain to animal production and to veterinary and other health sciences. The Department seeks to align its instructional and programmatic initiatives with One Health perspectives in the areas of husbandry, public health, epidemiology, welfare and ethics, reproduction, and physiology.
Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate- and graduate-level introductory animal science courses and other areas appropriate to the expertise of the individual and needs of the department. Courses taught may include, but are not limited to, livestock production and management, food animal medicine, production medicine, parasitology, emerging infectious diseases, and epidemiology. Duties may also include supervision of undergraduate senior projects, supervising graduate student research, and participating in department service activities. The successful candidate is expected to excel at teaching, develop an applied research program, demonstrate the ability to obtain external funding, and actively incorporate Learn by Doing into their work with students.
The successful candidate will have experience in and a passion for undergraduate teaching in these animal science-related disciplines, and will be expected to develop an independent applied research program in their field of expertise. It is expected that research will support or advance understanding of the interrelatedness of environmental, animal, and human wellbeing, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to collaborate across departments, colleges, and institutions to expand or complement existing research programs in the department and college. Grade and salary commensurate with education and experience of the individual selected. Anticipated hiring ranges:
Assistant Professor: $82,000-$90,000
Associate: $90,504-$99,000

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Doctorate in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or a closely related field. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to and evidence of quality, student-centered learning and teaching. Evidence of potential to develop a successful academic research program at Cal Poly, including external funding and publications. Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated proficiency in the written and oral use of the English language. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and/or service.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the public is essential. Cross-disciplinary research from the farm to the end-consumer product is encouraged. The ability to collaborate on research with faculty across the College and University, and international experience or the desire to cultivate international connections and collaborations. Preference will be given to those with experience in working in diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment. Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities and industry experience.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Animal Sciences Department, which includes over 800 students in the two majors, boasts the most comprehensive and the best undergraduate program in livestock production and management in the West. Through its faculty and students, the Department manages commercial herds and flocks of dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep, swine, and poultry on a farm of some 6,000 acres with the support of several new facilities, including a state-of-the-art $6.5 million meat processing center and $6 million animal nutrition center. Recent gifts of more than $10 million have been given to the Department to enhance these living laboratories where our students gain hands-on experience on our production units. Graduates of Animal Science and Dairy Science are prepared for meaningful careers in the animal industries, allied professions, and graduate studies.
