Description AFTERSCHOOL RECREATION ASSISTANT (CASUAL/SEASONAL)
(Job Code 9325)Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).
The City of Sunnyvale is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in assisting with supervising youth groups in elementary, middle school, and high school programs. Currently there are vacancies in our Youth and Teens work unit primarily responsible for community events, school year and summer youth programs.
Essential Job Functions
(May include, but are not limited to, the following):
- Assist with supervising a group of youth in school day and after school programs, holiday camps, and special events (openings for elementary, middle school and high school programs).
- Assist with planning, organizing, and leading recreation activities including arts and crafts, sports and games.
- Be flexible and able to respond to change.
- Take attendance and assist with record-keeping.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment.
- Attend staff meetings and program planning dates.
- Issue, maintain and store equipment and supplies.
- Interact with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers, School District and City staff.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants.
- Be prepared to be loud, excited, outgoing, and energetic as you lead kids in activities.
Position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag, push, and pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.
- Minimum age is 16 years old.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision or in team with other staff.
- Selected candidates must attend all required trainings.
Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record or the ability to supply alternate transportation as approved by the appointing authority.DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, or Farsi.
- College courses in education, social service, recreation, human services, etc.
- Experience working directly with the public in a recreation or education setting.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook).
