Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:

Swim Coach I ($20.25 per hour):
  • Must be 17 years of age and posses required certifications.
  • Possess the following certifications: Lifeguard, CPR / AED for Lifeguards, First Aid.

Swim Coach II ($21.50 per hour):
  • Must be 17 years of age and posses required certifications.
  • Possess the following certifications: Lifeguard, CPR / AED for Lifeguards, First Aid.
  • Must have one season of aquatic experience.

Swim Coach III ($22.00 per hour):
  • Must be 17 years of age and posses required certifications.
  • Possess the following certifications: Lifeguard, CPR / AED for Lifeguards, First Aid.
  • Must possess one season Swim Team coaching experience.

The Swim Coach I- III is a temporary position and will be responsible for coaching neighborhood swim teams. Participating in tri-meets and citywide meets, lifeguarding and other duties as assigned.

Required Training and Certifications:
  • Training for applicants will be offered by the City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department - Aquatic Division.
  • Applicants must successfully pass the 40+ hour Lifeguard Training course to be considered for the Lifeguard position.
  • Returning Lifeguard applicants (with current Lifeguarding/First Aid/ CPR / AED certifications issued within the last year from the date of training) will be required to take a review course in lieu of the 40+ hour class required for new lifeguards.

  • Physical Requirements:
    Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds. Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant's needs and safety issues; and tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement. Ability to adapt to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, swimming, stretching and reaching; and frequently walk and sit when leading various recreational activities. Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions; and in confined spaces.

Pay Range
$20.25 - $22.00 per hour

Days and Hours
  • Work shifts and locations will vary, up to 40 hours per week.
  • Evenings, Weekends, & Holidays may be required.
  • May be required to work during special events outside the normal hours for programming needs.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Coaches Neighborhood swim teams.
  • Participates in four tri-meets and one citywide meet.
  • Performs administrative duties.
  • May work as Head Lifeguard/Manager.
  • Verbally communicates with both public and staff.
  • Develops, schedules, and conducts activities and events.
  • Promotes and implements programs and/or special events.
  • Coordinates assigned citywide events.
  • Ensures all events and activities conform to appropriate safety and other rules.
  • Ensures that facilities and equipment used for programs or events are properly set up and maintained.
  • Assists in organizing and conducting recreation activities.
  • Plans, organizes and leads recreational program activities.
  • Maintains, inventories and cares for City property and equipment.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of materials and supplies necessary to conduct programs.
  • Cleans program areas after completion of activities and at end of work day.
  • Demonstrates cooperative behavior with team, supervisors and the public.
  • Monitors and records compliance with safety and department guidelines and rules.
  • Maintains attendance, activity, supply and equipment records.
  • Assists in development of lesson or activity plans and program evaluations.
  • Communicates with a wide range of people.
  • Provides information and directions.
  • Encourages and guides participants.
  • Sets up equipment for scheduled activities/events.
  • Coaches and officiates sports activities when needed.
  • May include cashiering duties.
