California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), one of 23 campuses in the California State University (CSU) system and the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Dean of Students.
Located on a 92-acre waterfront campus in Vallejo, 30 miles northeast of San Francisco, Cal Maritime has approximately 900 students and offers seven bachelor’s degree programs , a fully online master’s degree program , and various extended learning programs and courses. Established in 1929, Cal Maritime is a distinctive learning community known for its small class sizes, first-rate faculty, and commitment to combining classroom learning with applied technology, leadership development, and global awareness.
Reporting to the Vice President for Cadet Leadership and Development (VPCLD), the Dean of Students assists the VPCLD in providing vision, leadership, and management for the Division of Cadet Leadership and Development and manages the Division in the absence of the Vice President. The Dean of Students serves as an advocate for students, as a builder of community, and as a thought leader and strategic partner to the VPCLD, imagining new possibilities for the student experience as Cal Maritime addresses strategic issues and becomes a leading 21st-century public maritime university.
The Dean of Students is responsible for planning and assessment, policies and procedures, staff supervision, personnel actions and discipline, budget allocations, and general administration for all areas within the portfolio: Residence Life, Community Standards, Educational Opportunity Program, Community Engagement, Inclusion Center, and Associated Students of the California Maritime Academy, Inc. (ASCMA). The Dean of Students initiates the Behavioral Intervention and CARE teams; serves as Deputy Title IX Officer; consults with University Legal Counsel, President’s Office, Police Department, and other offices on student and community issues; provides consultation and leadership regarding crisis intervention; and interprets university policies to students. The Dean of Students serves as the VPCLD’s designee for campus community initiatives, including First Year Experience (FYE) and the ASCMA Board of Directors; leads campus-wide events such as Orientation and Commencement; and represents the Division on committees such as Instructionally Related Activities Committees. The position supervises approximately 16 employees, including four direct reports, and manages a $1.6 million budget. The hiring salary is anticipated at $9,584 - $10,000 per month commensurate with education and experience.
Requirements include a master’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of seven years of higher education experience. The successful candidate will also demonstrate proven leadership ability, a passion for working with students, an entrepreneurial and innovative outlook, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an affinity for the distinctive mission and character of the institution.
