Mental Health Outreach Workers (MHOW) provide peer support to BHS consumers and their families. They provide a range of supportive activities while working under the direction of various mental health professionals and para-professional staff with relative independence. They also assist parents and caregivers of children, adolescents, and adult consumers at county facilities, in client homes, and other community locations. MHOWs provide support for outpatient Children and Youth Services, outpatient Adult and Older Adults Services, Crisis Services, the Warm-Line, Justice and Decriminalization services, and on Mobile Crisis Teams.
MHOWs are paraprofessionals who use their lived experience to help other navigate systems of support such as behavioral health, education, court and criminal justice (include probation), and child protective services, among others. the location of support provision can vary from the office to the community. The Ideal Candidate
- Lived experience as a consumer or family member of a consumer (child or adult) of mental health services and be comfortable using their lived experience to support and guide individuals who are in various stages of mental health recovery and treatment
- Willingness to work different shifts/days, including weekends and holidays as needed
- the desire to help others by modeling respect and integrity without judgement
- Strong communication skills (both in person and on the phone) using strength-based concepts, empathy, and hope
- Ability to teach advocacy skills, coping skills, basic mental health concepts and link individuals to supportive resources both at BHS and within the community
- Ability to work as a team member with clinical, medical, and peer staff within BHS
- Ability to understand and work effectively with diverse cultural and ethnic groups
- Ability to organize one's time and appointments, use a computer, take notes and summarize in formal documents, follow-through on a daily assigned tasks in a timely manner, facilitate support groups, attend community outreach events, and be able to transport clients with county vehicles as needed.

Assists various mental health professional and paraprofessional staff by providing a wide variety of services in the area of community mental health.
Assists in teaching basic mental health information and coping skills to clients and families, particularly in areas of utilizing the resources of the children's, adult and older adult systems of care; may assist in teaching basic mental health concepts of support, relationships, crisis management, medication management, vocational involvement and related areas.
Provides outreach to locate persons who may need additional support and services to maintain and develop optimal functioning in the community; may assist in providing follow-up counseling as to treatment options and resources available; learns to make referrals as appropriate.
Assists in interviewing clients, gathering and assembling related information and preparing reports; maintains appropriate records and files.
Participates in development of programs and delivery of services for mental health consumers; learns to provide information and counseling regarding rights, complaint and grievance procedures, and advocacy.
Provides basic community mental health education to consumers, family groups, community groups, and other interested persons.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Either I Experience :
One year as a Mental Health Outreach Worker Trainee.Or II Experience :
One year responsible work experience providing community based mental health services, working with community based organizations that provide mental health related services to culturally diverse groups or working with seriously and persistently mentally ill adults or severely mentally disabled children.And License :

Must be recognized as a designated consumer of mental health services or as an immediate family member of a consumer with serious mental health needs.

Fluently speak, read and write the English language; learn a wide variety of mental health programs and procedures; understand and follow technical written and oral-directions; understand and work effectively with diverse cultural and ethnic groups; work with individuals with severe and persistent mental health problems; learn to make verbal presentations to highly diverse community groups; establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff, clients and the general public; learn basic principles of teaching or counseling.

- Written Exam: The civil service written exam is a multiple choice format. If the written exam is administered alone, it will be 100% of the overall score. Candidates must achieve a minimum rating of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list.
- Oral Exam: The oral exam is a structured interview process that will assess the candidate's education, training, and experience and may include a practical exercise. The oral exam selection process is not a hiring interview. A panel of up to four people will determine the candidate's score and rank for placement on the eligible list. Top candidates from the eligible list are referred for hiring interviews. If the oral exam is administered alone, it will be 100% of the overall score. Candidates must achieve a minimum rating of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list.
- Written & Oral Exam: If both a written exam and an oral exam is administered, the written exam is weighted at 60% and the oral exam is weighted at 40% unless otherwise indicated on the announcement. Candidates must achieve a minimum rating of 70% on each examination in order to be placed on the eligible list.
- Rate-out: A rate-out is an examination that involves a paper rating of the candidate's application using the following criteria: education, training, and experience. Candidates will not be scheduled for the rate-out process.
