California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position in the Landscape Architecture Department in an area related to the study and/or promotion of Landscape Architecture (Ethnic Studies Affinity) through an ethnic studies lens.
Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona - nearly half (49%) of new students were transfers in Fall 2020. 58% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 49% Latinx, 21% Asian, 15% White, 3% Black, 5% International, 3% two or more races, 3% unknown, and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. 39% of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

Tenure track faculty hires will

College of Environmental Design
The mission of the College of Environmental Design (ENV) is to provide an outstanding academic and professional learning experience within a multidisciplinary structure. Creative excellence, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility have guided ENV's programs since it was established in 1970. Our award-winning programs offer professional degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning; at the undergraduate level in Art History and Visual Communication Design; and at the graduate level in Regenerative Studies. Faculty research, professional and creative activities are brought into the classroom through the Teacher-Scholar Model. Support and recognition for faculty efforts facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and promote their rich talent, expertise, and influence. Department of Landscape Architecture
Cal Poly Pomona’s Department of Landscape Architecture was established in 1957, with the Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA) program. Our Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program, established in 1972, long recognized for its focus on groundbreaking ecological planning and regenerative design solutions, is getting ready to celebrate its 50th year. We cultivate success through a diverse culture of experiential learning, discovery, and innovation. We demonstrate academic quality, relevance, and excellence through the teaching, learning, scholarship, and creative activities of our student-centered faculty.
We are committed to being the model for inclusive design programs to inspire creativity and innovation, embrace local and global social and environmental challenges, and transform lives through sustainable and equitable design. Our students, faculty, and staff have worked together, especially since Summer 2020, to enrich our landscape architecture programs by building on the knowledge, experience, and perspectives of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). This work was inspired by and continues to respond to an
Open Letter from Students to the Department (June 8, 2020). To begin this work, we organized a Bravely Learning Community (derived from our department motto “Bravely Curious”) to reimagine landscape architecture curriculum, student support, and program culture. We received a CSU Teagle Grant to explore an anti-racist approach for developing a student-centered curriculum. As a result of these initiatives, our students and faculty are positioning themselves to lead and support an equal, diverse, and inclusive vision for the global future of landscape architecture within the complex, diverse, transforming ecologies and culture of our Southern California context. We are excited for our new faculty members to become an integral part of this continuing effort.
Position Description:
Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture - Ethnic Studies Affinity Cluster The department is seeking a new
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture to join the faculty in Fall 2023. We are especially interested in candidates with a demonstrated ability or potential to actively engage in and support the Inclusive Excellence of our academic community. The successful candidate will bring an ethnic studies lens to inclusive design and planning processes, community-led action, landscape and urban history and theory, or physical design that prioritizes minoritized communities. The successful candidate will demonstrate an inclusive approach across experience, disciplines and processes. The new faculty member will be a part of the CPP Ethnic Studies Affinity Cluster Faculty and will have the opportunity to engage with a new and permanent Office of Ethnic Studies Affinity Teaching and Scholarship. This position will include unique access to collaborative opportunities across disciplines and methodological vantage points, mentorship, and professional development. The Ethnic Studies Affinity Faculty, and the resources to support them, are a key element of CPP’s ongoing efforts to ensure the flourishing of our diverse students and faculty and be the leading inclusive polytechnic university in the nation.
The new tenure-track assistant professor will teach landscape architecture courses in both our
Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture and
Master of Landscape Architecture programs. All faculty are expected to contribute to three academic roles: teaching, service to the department and university, and advancing Landscape Architecture through research, scholarship, and/or creative activities. We seek a colleague who is committed to student-centered teaching while pursuing scholarship in their area of specialization. Faculty are expected to teach courses in the curricula for the department’s accredited undergraduate and graduate programs with some emphasis on developing new courses aligned with the position descriptions of this announcement. The ideal candidates are expected to build upon the unique strengths of our CPPLA students and community, and the CPP commitment to Inclusive Excellence.
Minimum Requirements:
- An advanced degree in landscape architecture or field(s) related to the position description. Advanced degree must be completed by the start of the appointment;
- Teaching experience (this could include experience as a teaching assistant), and/or professional experience in landscape architecture or a related field relevant to the position description;
- Potential to advance the academic knowledge and/or practice of Landscape Architecture through research, scholarship, and/or creative activities as described in the positions;
- Potential to develop and teach courses related to the position in both the BSLA and MLA programs; and
- A Student Success Statement that demonstrates applicant’s commitment to and/or record of contributions through teaching, scholarship, and/or service, by addressing at least two of the Inclusive Excellence criteria listed above (statement is limited to 2 pages).
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
The successful applicant may bring additional academic and professional qualifications, characteristics, skills, and experiences including:
- Professional licensure or the credentials to obtain licensure in landscape architecture, and/or SITES Accredited Professional, LEED-AP, or other relevant credentials;
- Record of service to the discipline of landscape architecture or related fields in academic and/or professional organizations, and/or community organizations; or
- Record of teaching in the subject matter associated with the particular emphasis of the position descriptions; or
- Record of research, scholarly and/or creative activities, or professional practice in Landscape Architecture or an allied field related to the position.
- Record of research or practice working with minoritized communities in inclusive design and planning processes, community-led action from a deeply representative and inclusive approach to landscape architecture; or
- Record of research, scholarly and/or creative works, or practice that connects landscape architecture and climate change.
