SR. TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEER


Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

POSITION/RECRUITMENT INFORMATION
This recruitment is being held to establish an Open Eligible List to fill a vacancy in this class until the next recruitment. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications.

THE DIVISION
The Orange County Sheriff's Department - Technology Division consists of approximately 150 personnel organized in five bureaus that specialize in specific technologies and services, including Operations, 800MHz Radio Communications, Applications, Infrastructure, and Security. Each section maintains a staff of Managers, Engineers, Technicians, and support staff to provide a high level of operational and technical expertise to various public safety functions including Law Enforcement, Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services, Lifeguard, Park Rangers, Public Works, Local Government, Courts, County and City jails, and Probation facilities. The Division supports all information technologies for approximately 4,000 Department employees and more than 320 law enforcement applications. OCSD Technology maintains a closed, wide area data network only accessible by law-enforcement, and has direct connections with more than 50 Orange County law enforcement agencies for information sharing. The Technology Division's functions include: application development and support, help desk support, desktop support, body-worn camera, mobile, and MDC support, storage and server support, network and CCTV support, network security operations, and the management of the 800MHz Countywide Coordinated Communications System. OCSD Technology is committed to fully supporting all Divisions of the Sheriff's Department and all Orange County, mutual aid, and federal partners with the honest delivery of high quality IT systems and excellent customer service.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Senior Telecommunications Engineer supervises and manages the work group and functions within the Dispatch Systems Unit. This person is responsible for the direct supervision of engineering, technical, and professional staff, and performs other duties as required, under the direction of the Assistant Director/Chief Radio Engineer. This incumbent will set the technical direction, and develop the budget and spending oversight for their unit. Responsible for interaction with customers, employee coaching and development and new technology development.

Education and Experience

Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the Date of California by date of appointment and one (1) year of experience subsequent to registration which would have applied or developed the knowledge and abilities listed above.
OR
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in electronic or electrical engineering or a closely related field and three (3) years' experience which would have applied or developed the knowledge and abilities listed above.
OR
A combination of education and experience in electronic engineering, design or systems troubleshooting which would have applied or developed the knowledge and abilities listed above.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements: Applicant must be willing to perform duties commensurate with the position. Long periods of computer operation and office-type work are required. Must be able to lift heavy equipment weighting up to 100 pounds. Some assignments may require the ability to climb and work at heights that may exceed 100 feet. Incumbents must be able to utilize their hands, arms, or shoulders repetitively to operate power tools and occasionally operate heavy construction equipment such as forklifts. Assignments may include crawling in attics and under consoles. Vision must be sufficient to perform the necessary functions of the position.

Environmental Conditions: Must be willing to work in jails and in remote areas in any type of weather conditions.



SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
A background check consisting of employment history, professional references, criminal check, traffic violations, drug use, credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license, and /or official transcripts) will be conducted. All applicants will be required to pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation. ELIGIBLE LIST
After all procedures have been completed, the Sheriff Human Resources will establish an eligible list of qualified candidates.
