Job Description

About Our Job

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed,at a city site and/or in the field at least two days a week, and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.

Denver International Airport (DEN) is the third-busiest airport in the United States and one of the top ten busiest airports in the world, connecting our community globally through flight and business. DEN is the primary economic engine for the state of Colorado, generating more than $33 billion for the region annually and employing nearly 30,000 people. At DEN, we are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive and equitable workplace. We celebrate individuality and uplift all races, ethnicities, gender identities, national origins, ages, abilities, religion, and LGBTQIA+ communities. We know that our diversity makes us stronger, and we strive to keep diversity, equity and inclusion at the center of all that we do.

This position in DEN’s Sustainability Division is part of the Environmental Services water team. This team supports DEN in achieving its environmental objectives and compliance obligations, which includes meeting the highest attainable use for receiving waters at DEN, meeting the requirements of the DEN Individual industrial stormwater permit, meeting its Metro wastewater contribution permit obligations, and staying compliant with Denver’s municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) permit. Aircraft deicing and activities associated with deicing have been identified as DEN’s most significant environmental risk. The primary means of mitigating this risk is DEN’s deicing waste (DIW) system. The DIW system, a structural control, is extensive and includes infrastructure to collect deicing waste at areas where aircraft deicing occurs. It includes valves, piping and pump stations that direct and convey flow to storage ponds, as well as a series of valves and piping that controls the discharge of deicing wastewater to the sanitary sewer system. This position presents an opportunity to support one of the largest DIW systems in North America while also performing work to support other water programs at DEN.

Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operating DEN’s deicing waste system including the discharge of deicing waste to the sanitary sewer system
  • Investigation of illicit discharges to storm and sanitary systems
  • Stormwater and wastewater sampling to ascertain effluent and pollution levels, including new requirements for sampling PFAS
  • Review of engineering and architectural plans to support DEN’s deicing waste system, including on-site review of system attributes and construction installation
  • Contribute expertise to DEN’s environmental sustainability programs including an Environmental Management System (EMS) that is certified to ISO Standard 14001:2015
