The Fresno County Department of Internal Services is currently offering a challenging and rewarding career opportunity for experienced, adept electricians interested in pursuing a career as a Maintenance Electrician.

Maintenance Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment and wiring at Fresno County facilities. The ideal candidate will possess journey level experience and employ appropriate techniques and procedures in the accomplishment of assigned tasks.

Note : The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.

As a condition of employment, selected candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities. Fresno County detention facilities are "No Hostage" facilities. This means in the event you are taken hostage, the County will not bargain for your safe release.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

  • Plans electrical work, determines required materials, and estimates costs.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical raceways, switchgear, and related enclosures for electrical services.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs lighting fixtures, conduit, breakers, fuses, and related parts and equipment.
  • Analyzes electrical systems using voltage and amperage readings and makes recommendations for changes.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs motors, compressors, generators, and transformer taps, as well as other electrical systems and related components.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical wiring, as well as data and fiber optic cabling.
  • May respond to after-hour emergencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of :
  • Electrical codes, theory, design, principles, and practices;
  • Materials, methods, and the tools involved in rough/finish electrical work;
  • Operation of electrical motors, compressors, and generators;
  • Proper use and operation of hand tools, as well as electric power tools, including their maintenance and repair;
  • On-the-job safety and use of personal protective equipment;
  • Design techniques, tools, and interpretation of blueprints, technical plans, drawings, and models.
Skills/Abilities to :
  • Read work instructions and safety labels;
  • Read and interpret blueprint drawings and related construction documents;
  • Practice appropriate safety precautions and procedures;
  • Effectively operate voltmeters, meggers, ammeters, voltage testers, and other modern electrical tools and equipment used to test, install, maintain, and repair electrical devices and systems;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Install or adapt equipment and technology to County facilities;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels, as well as with other agencies and the public;
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of initiative, maturity, integrity, accountability, and good judgment;
  • Respond to after-hour emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications OPTION 1 :
Experience : Six (6) years of full-time, paid work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment, wiring, and systems, up to and including 480 volts, in a commercial and/or industrial setting.
OPTION 2 :
Certification : Possession of a certificate of completion from an electrician apprenticeship program recognized by the California Apprenticeship Council, Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, or a state apprenticeship council authorized by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training.
Experience : Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment, wiring, and systems, up to and including 480 volts, in a commercial and/or industrial setting.
In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required:
License : Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.
Other : As a condition of employment, selected candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities.

SELECTION PROCESS :

Depending on the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below.

  • Oral Examination - An oral examination includes a panel consisting of at least two members within a similar field of expertise as the vacancy. Candidates are asked structured questions and must respond orally to allow the panel to evaluate the specific qualifications of each applicant. If required, the oral examination may be offered in an online format. Please indicate on the supplemental questionnaire if you have the ability to complete an online examination.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to an additional 12 months), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
