Department Summary

The Circulation Department is charged with providing patrons with assistance when checking out or returning library materials, such as books, textbooks, or laptops. The staff in this department also answers general and directional questions for patrons. The Department maintains a Reserve Collection made up of textbooks and other materials deposited by faculty for use by students. This department also oversees the duplicating and scanning equipment in the Copy Room.

Job Summary

The Weekend Lead will oversee Circulation Desk workflow during hours of operation on Saturdays and Sundays. They will open and close the library building and supervise one or two student assistants, assist patrons to check-in and out library materials, assist patrons with payment of fees in person or online, and assist with tasks at the Circulation Desk during the week.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to
  • Check library materials in and out
  • Assist patrons with issues on equipment (printers, etc.)
  • Answer patrons' questions & support information inquiries regarding policies
  • Create or update library accounts
  • Assist with guiding student workers and communicate workflow
  • Instruct patrons how to pay fines via their online library account
  • Assist with maintaining the course reserves collection & communicate with faculty
  • Use library automated systems to determine status of and provide information on materials checked out by patrons
  • Act as backup staff in emergency staffing situations
  • Other job-related duties as assigned


Employment Status: Full-time, "non-exempt", probationary position (with the possibility of converting to permanent).

Work Schedule
  • Monday- Friday: May be required to work days and/or nights.
  • Saturday: 9:30 am- 2:30 pm; Sunday: 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Key Qualifications:
  • Experience working in library setting and demonstrated experience with standard computer software applications.
  • Experience providing customer service to a diverse clientele in a learning environment and ability to assist library users in a professional, supportive manner.
  • Be able to work cooperatively with others in a busy environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply rules in accordance with policy, regulations and procedures under varying circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform standard arithmetic operations.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision to perform assigned duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain effective communication on all levels and follow unit workflow.
  • General understanding of library terminology and library automated systems.
  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records.
  • Ability to interpret library unit's policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
  • Working knowledge of institution's and library's policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
  • Basic knowledge of national standards and guidelines pertaining to libraries, including working knowledge of institution's standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to source and apply such policies and standards to avoid potential violations.
  • Full proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystem(s) pertaining to functional area.
  • Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
  • General knowledge of library accounting and budget procedures, including the ability to perform arithmetic operations to track and monitor vendor accounts and budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
  • Effective communication and interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
  • Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers.


Education and Experience
  • College degree (2-year or 4-year).
  • 2 years of work experience in a library, or certificate in library services or two years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift, lower, push, pull, and carry loads ranging in weight from 5-25 lbs. for distances up to 20 feet.
  • Must be capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, twisting, stooping and bending; depending upon the project.
  • Employee may spend 20-50% of day sitting, 20-50% of day standing, 20-50% of day walking.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience providing service at a Circulation desk.

Salary

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,319 - $3,379 per month

Classification Salary Range: $3,319 - $5,983 per month
