This is an exciting and special opportunity to take that next career step as a Director of the Environment, Health and Safety Department, reporting to the University's Associate Vice President for Risk Management Services, at a beautiful California State University located in Sacramento California. We are seeking an experienced EHS professional, CIH/CSP preferred, who has worked in either the private sector or at another University and who has experience managing a staff of professionals performing all aspects of chemical management, safety management, environmental management and hazardous waste management. The person in this position will be a highly regarded advocate for continuous improvement of our proactive safety and health management systems, and the person who drives university compliance with all internal and external safety and health regulations. The EHS Director interacts directly to assist all members of our campus community, office and facilities staff, faculty and instructors, researchers, students, and visitors so that they can enjoy the full range of university activities safely while maintaining compliance with all the university policies and procedures for EHS.
We seek an individual with experience and expertise in chemical safety management at a complex organization, and all aspects of occupational safety, including safety training and coaching, incident investigation and OSHA compliance. As the Director of the department, the incumbent will mentor the staff through their professional growth and meet our university standards for diversity and inclusion. The University supports ongoing professional development and educational growth, even for seasoned professionals who may be on track to attain the CIH or CSP.
The Director manages the team that drives chemical safety, industrial hygiene, safety committees, hazardous waste, environmental management, groundwater protection, occupational incident investigation, and oversight of safety training and messaging content and delivery. While experience as an EHS manager at another university is a plus, we are also interested in candidates who have EHS manager experience in the private sector.

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Risk Management Services, the incumbent provides planning, administration, and coordination of the University's Environment, Health and Safety Program. The EHS Director is responsible for leadership in the formulation, implementation, and administration of appropriate policies, procedures, practices, and safeguards of campus personnel and the University community, within the context of the campus education mission and public interests. This includes: safety engineering, accident prevention, chemical and radiation risk management, safety-related training, laser safety, construction safety, indoor air quality, and chemical and safety emergency preparedness.
The EHS Director manages Hazardous Materials Management, including safe collection, storage and removal of hazardous materials, universal wastes, and hazardous wastes resulting for academic, maintenance or construction activities. The EHS Director implements and administers the University's hazardous materials management efforts and assures campus compliance with applicable local, state and federal hazardous materials regulations and practices.
The EHS Director oversees the development and implementation of written occupational safety and environmental health programs and training courses required by local, state and federal regulations.
Working with department supervisors, the Director ensures that compliance training opportunities are
made available to employees, and their supervisors, where work activities expose them to hazards covered
by various regulatory compliance requirements, and that campus overall safety compliance training is monitored and reported regularly to administration.
The EHS Director provides consultative assistance to faculty, staff, students and members of auxiliary organizations regarding health and safety issues and works cooperatively with program centers to find solutions to compliance variances identified during internal/ external inspections.
The EHS Director is responsible for ensuring that current paper and electronic files are maintained in accordance with regulatory requirements. Records include: hazardous materials and chemical inventories, chemical safety data, accident reports, safety and health codes and regulations, and safety compliance training records, etc. The Director is also responsible for identifying Key EHS Performance Indicators (KPis) and for providing related performance reports as determined appropriate by administration.
The EHS Director shall serve on or provide assistance to campus safety- related committees, such as the Executive Safety Committee and any of the other departmental or labor specific safety committees, including the University Biosafety committee, and provide periodic reports regarding implementation of programs, status of concerns, and actions taken by committees. The Director serves as the delegate for the AVP Risk Management as the contact person and liaison with external EHS regulatory agencies.
The EHS Director shall develop an operating budget for the EH & S department and is responsible for related budget administration of consultants and equipment for the EHS department. The Director provides leadership, supervision, and prepares annual performance evaluations of direct reports of EHS Analysts, Specialists, Administrative Assistants and Student Interns.
The EHS Director conducts, or manages staff who conducts inspections and procedures involving chemicals, asbestos, hazardous materials, and ionizing radiation sources, and maintains records of findings and corrective actions.FLSA

The office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) works to assure safe and healthful environments for all segments of the campus population, through programs of information and education, review and monitoring, technical consultation, and provision of direct services.
EH&S provides the University community the services and training needed to ensure safety and environmental responsibility.
EH&S is also responsible for developing programs to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal health, safety and environmental regulations, and campus policies on environmental health and safety. Required Qualifications
1.Undergraduate BS degree in Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or similar related major from an accredited institution of higher education.
2. Five years of experience working directly in an EHS focused position involving administration, project management, or EHS program implementation.
3. One year experience directly managing employees performing EHS related work.
4. One year experience managing EHS compliance, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations compliance.
5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form, set priorities and administer programs.
6. Ability to use MS Windows and related software. Preferred Qualifications
7. Over five years of related EHS experience
8. A Masters level degree in Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or similar related major
9. Knowledge and ability to perform as the campus Radiation Safety Officer
