The City of Laguna Beach is now seeking enthusiastic and customer service oriented individuals for the position of Traffic Control Aide (Part-Time)!
This recruitment is open on a continuous basis and will close when the needs of the Department are met. The first application review is scheduled on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.
Schedule: Works a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
The Position: Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of traffic control duties and efficiently and safely directs motor vehicles and pedestrian traffic within designated areas. This position also as sists the public by providing general traffic control related information and/or directions. This position is supervised by sworn and civilian supervisors within the Police Department.
Application/Selection Process: Applications will be screened carefully and selected candidates will be invited to undergo a department interview. The appointing hiring authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions.

Preplacement Process: A candidate selected for this position must successfully complete a Personal History Questionnaire with the Laguna Beach Police Department and a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice. Successful completion of a pre-placement medical exam including pre-employment drug testing may be required.

Examples of Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic by providing manual direction and/or operating automated traffic control signals to facilitate the flow of traffic
  • Sets-up and removes traffic control devices, including cones, signs, barricades, road flares, message boards and other related equipment
  • Provides information and assists the public with a variety of requests and inquiries
  • Follows applicable safety rules and regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Any combination demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Age: Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older to begin employment.
Experience: An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to perform the essential job functions is considered qualifying.
License/Certificate Requirements: Due to the performance of some field duties, which may require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid California Driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

Supplemental Information

This position requires shift work which includes weekends, holidays and evening hours. The position is also subject to being on-call for traffic related incidents, accidents, natural disasters, and other emergency needs.

Ability to: Provide a high level of customer service to the public while communicating with people in various emotional states; maintain composure during stressful situations; work both independently and as a part of a team; maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with department staff and the public; multi-task; learn applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to traffic control; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; follow oral and written instructions; direct traffic flow, give directions, read maps, and direct the public to various destinations; learn and use police radio codes and portable police radios; safely operate city vehicles; observe and report hazardous conditions.
Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions: Physical demands require walking, running or standing on hard surfaces and uneven terrain for intermittent or prolonged periods of time; stooping, squatting, bending, twisting, reaching, and safely restraining, lifting and/or carrying moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction, and possess the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. The employee must be able to use both hands, arms, and legs for periods up to 8 hours; stoop and bend; squat, climb, and use repetitive arm and wrist motions to direct traffic. The position requires the employee to work under pressure and maintain a fast pace.

Environmental Adaptability: Ability to work under sometimes unsafe and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as inclement weather, smoke, fumes, gas, untreated sewage, excessive heat and cold, high frequency noise, dirt, dust, grease, oil, pesticides, traffic, and equipment and machinery poses a risk of injury. May involve exposure to dangerous and/or diseased animals, as well as other potentially hazardous substances.

Laguna Beach: With seven miles of City beaches and towering hills with captivating Pacific views, Laguna Beach residents enjoy some of the most stunning landscapes in Southern California. The City of Laguna Beach hosts millions of visitors to its world-famous arts festivals and beautiful beaches. Services provided to its resident population of approximately 24,000 include police, fire, marine safety, recreation, parks, public works, community development, parking, transit and animal control.

The Department: The Police Department is organized into three divisions (Support and Investigative Services, Field Services, and Professional Services), and provides general law enforcement services, including animal control. The department augments its services with the assistance of reserve officers, community volunteers representing our various volunteer groups such as COPs, CERT, and the Animal Shelter, police explorers, and Police Cadet and Beach Patrol positions during the summer months.
