Job Description


Salary: Up to $22.97 per hour

DEFINITION: This is a seasonal, part-time, hourly position working under the direction of the Aquatics Recreation Supervisor and Aquatics Recreation Coordinator. This position monitors and coordinates the work activities of Pool Lifeguards and instructs swim lessons as assigned.

This recruitment requires that current American Red Cross First Aide, CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard Training be uploaded with the online application to be considered complete. Applicants appearing best qualified based upon a review of the application and responses to supplemental questions will be invited to participate in the testing process on Tuesday, June 7, 2022. The testing process will consist of a timed swim test and oral interview.

Essential Job Functions

The following essential functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those below, to address business needs and changing business practices:

  • Working and communicating effectively with children, the public and other staff members;
  • Promoting a positive, friendly and energetic attitude;
  • Following oral and written instructions;
  • Implementing the latest safety procedures, policies, rules, regulations and ordinances set forth by both the American Red Cross and City of El Segundo to assist and protect the life and well-being of each and every patron;
  • Surveying a public swimming pool;
  • Preventing patron accidents;
  • Rescuing swimmers in distress;
  • Teaching beginning to advanced swim level courses;
  • Enforcing regulations and codes; and performs related work;
  • Assisting with coordination various aquatic activities;
  • Performing basic pool maintenance and cleaning;
  • Monitoring pool chemistry every two hours;
  • Completing various forms and paperwork pertinent to the day-to-day operation of an aquatic facility;
  • Performing minor facility clean up and maintenance
  • Ensuring that the pool, decks, and dressing rooms are safe, clean and orderly; and
  • Performing other related duties, ass assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Knowledge of:
  • Teaching principles and practices, swimming instruction techniques and methods; and
  • Water safety practices, basic recordkeeping procedures and effective customer service techniques.
Skill in:
  • Perform a wide variety of swimming and diving skills;
  • Possess sufficient strength, agility, hearing and vision to perform the duties of a lifeguard;
  • Handle stressful situations with tact and diplomacy;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
  • Following directions from a supervisor;
  • Understanding and following posted work rules and procedures;
  • Accepting constructive criticism;
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION AND LICENSE/CERTIFICATE: A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Minimum one (1) year of recent, paid lifeguard experience or two (2) summer seasons of experience as a lifeguard, which must include experience teaching organized swim lessons and experience working with the public. Strong leadership skills and athletic background highly desirable. Must be 15 years of age.

Training: As a condition of employment, a lifeguard must attend all in-service trainings.

Certificate: Current American Red Cross certification in the following: First Aid, CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Training. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor certifications preferred but not required.

Please Note: Individuals in this classification are required to successfully pass a background check that complies with Public Resources Code Section 5164, which mandates that a city that hires a person to work at a park, playground, recreational center or beach, in a position having supervisory or disciplinary authority over a minor, shall complete an application that inquires whether that individual has been convicted of specified criminal offenses.
Working Conditions: Work is regularly performed indoors and outdoors in variable weather conditions. May be required to work a varied schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Required to wear a uniform while on duty.

Hourly employees may not exceed 999 hours in a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30) unless previously authorized. There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.
