Job Description

The Position

The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of Curator of Historic Structures* to fill one (1) vacancy in the Museum of Riverside . The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

The Curator of Historic Structures is responsible for management of and programming for two historic houses. The Victorian-era Heritage House is the only property currently open to the public. The Harada House and Harada House Interpretive Center are slated for rehabilitation and reconstruction respectively, which are expected to begin in 2022. The Museum of Riverside is also embarking upon an exciting project to renovate and expand its main downtown site, which is also a historic structure. The successful candidate for the position of Curator of Historic Structures will be an individual with a strong work ethic, a sense of humor, a can-do attitude, scholarly integrity, and the desire to be part of the team who will effect momentous change for the institution.

The Museum of Riverside has a distinguished history of collecting, exhibiting, and publishing in its areas of disciplinary expertise, which include history, Indigenous resources, culture, and natural science. The Curator of Historic Structures will plan and execute exhibitions and interpretation relating to the historic houses, and will work with the Museum Director, colleagues, and the community to steward their related collections. They will manage the general upkeep of the historic structures and maintain capital improvement schedules. The Curator of Historic Structures is liaison to an active volunteer corps. The Curator of Historic Structures may also contribute to the museum's ongoing effort to seek and administer grants and private donations.

Under general supervision, Museum Curators perform a variety of technical and professional duties in the assembling and caring for museum collections in Indigenous resources, history, or natural history; plan and provide materials for museum exhibitions and educational programs; (when assigned to the Anthropology division) provide interaction with Indigenous groups and university scholars to implement the Department's mission; (when assigned to the history division) provide public access to archival collections and answer research inquiries; work closely with all facets of the community to preserve this region's legacy; and do related work as required.

Work Performed
Typical duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
  • Work effectively on teams to implement the Museum's mission.
  • Locate, acquire and house appropriate artifacts or specimens.
  • Conduct detailed analysis to identify items.
  • Prepare and maintain proper collection records.
  • Provide necessary maintenance, preservation and conservation of collected materials.
  • Select artifacts and specimens and generally plan exhibitions within assigned field of responsibility.
  • Provide data for labels to emphasize exhibition features.
  • Present lectures or other programs to community groups, Museum audiences and professional organizations.
  • Contribute articles to the Museum newsletters and scholarly publications.
  • Conduct field research to gather data, specimens and photographic records.
  • Identify or authenticate objects for the general public.
  • Confer and cooperate with other resource and Museum personnel regarding materials sources, object data, exhibition details, publications, and programs.
  • Instruct interns and volunteers.


Recruitment Guidelines:

Education: Equivalent to a Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with major work in museology, history, anthropology, archeology, geology, natural science, zoology, or a closely related field of specialization. Three years of experience in the field and the interest to pursue graduate studies may substitute for the partial fulfillment of the Master's Degree requirement.

Experience: Three years of experience in the collection, preservation, interpretation, presentation of materials for Museum exhibitions and the presentation of public programs.

Highly Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience in the maintenance and management concerns that are particular to historic houses.
  • Experience in the collection, interpretation, and presentation of materials for museum exhibitions and public programs.
  • Knowledge of American material culture history, the principles of historic preservation, and contemporary museum practices.
  • Experience with collections management relational databases, TMS Collections in particular.
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as the Office suite, basic graphic design programs, and collections management software.
  • Experience in training and managing docents.
