Major Duties
Under general supervision, the Postdoctoral Research Assistant supports a five-year field study project that investigates trust evolution and calibration in real R3 (real users, real system, real consequences) systems, that is, in a heterogeneous (e.g., collocation, collaboration duration, vehicle types, capabilities) team of multiple real highly-autonomous machine teammates and real human teammates operating in situations with real consequences (e.g., life or death, or loss of a critical mission or valuable asset). The incumbent obtains foundational lessons on how trust evolves in real R3 human machine team systems.
• Identifies how technology and non-technology-related factors influence trust evolution. Validates and extends extant theoretical trust models.
• Formulates hypotheses and researches questions, and identifies ways to transition research results to applied research.
• Supervises/leads ARCS Fellows (graduate students) and ARCS Associates (undergraduates) in supporting research efforts.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• PhD (or near completion) with experience/interest in human automation trust research. Experience in ethnographic methods (e.g., applied methodology such as RAP or REAP).
• 2 years of experience conducting research in human automation trust or related areas, desired. Experience and a passion and intellectual interest in validating and extending extant theoretical trust models in human-machine environments.
• Applicants should have experience in ethnographic methods (experience with applied methodology such as RAP or REAP are encouraged). This study encourages applicants from a variety of disciplines that may explore the social dimensions of Increasingly Autonomous (IA) systems, e.g., anthropology, sociology, psychology, human factors engineering, etc.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

• Classification / grade: 2351 / Research Fellow
• The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $2427-$5000, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $2427-$16,773 per month.
• HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends.
• TEMP: This is an initial one-year appointment, renewable upon satisfactory progress in achieving the goals identified. The post is for up to 5 years.
