Full-time position available with the KC Water Laboratory Division located at 2 N.E. 32nd Ave.
Salary Range: $3,957-$6,769/month
Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.

Performs a wide variety of duties in a division comprised of scientific, technical, and administrative professionals providing water/wastewater testing services and drinking water quality complaint resolutions for the Water Services Department and its customers. This is supervisory and professional laboratory work performing complex chemical and microbiology tests. Supervises chemists and field sampling personnel, working in conjunction with them performing chemical and microbiologic sampling and analyses of surface waters, drinking water, wastewater, and water treatment chemical samples. Delivers analytical services at the level of Chemist while assuming additional supervisory and administrative responsibilities. Manages a laboratory section, ensuring that all work in the section is conducted in a safe, cost-effective, and efficient manner. Reviews, evaluates, and verifies laboratory test results. Work involves the set up and operation of specialized scientific instrumentation and the development, review and modification of standard operating procedures and methods. Troubleshoots and repairs instrumentation problems and keeps detailed maintenance logbooks on all equipment. Oversees thorough, scientifically valid QA/QC processes for all analysis performed in the lab section. Compiles, prepares, and certifies analytical reports and electronic data deliverables. An employee of this class exercises independent judgment in assigning tasks to subordinates, interpreting test results, preparing reports, and establishing sample workload priorities. Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRES an accredited Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences or related sciences and 3 years progressively responsible experience at the level of Chemist. Must possess a valid state issued drivers license in accordance with the City of KCMO policies. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer physical examination as prescribed by the City. Preference given to applicants with the bachelor's degree in organic chemistry, 4 years of professional experience performing organic analyses in a water laboratory. In-depth knowledge and hands on experience with a wide range of organic extraction techniques, EPA procedures, GC/MS technology, instrument software and LIMS. Hands on experience performing method development and validation and the ability to interpret data generated by the instrument software. Experience testing taste and odor compounds by SPME-GC/MS is preferred. Excellent and effective oral and scientific/technical writing communication skills. Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a cross-functional team and maintain effective working relationships.
