Position Description

Conservation Educators plan, organize, implement and evaluate educational programs designed to teach hunter and boating safety, environmental concepts and other wildlife related areas to the public, and participate in public relations activities.Incumbant wil organize and facilitate family-friendly educational programming designed to introduce the public to the fishing, hunting and shooting sports, Nevada's wildlife, principles of fisheries and wildlife management, methods for dealing with human wildlife conflict and environmental stewardship are also the position's responsibilities. Emphasis will be placed on traditional classroom instruction, digital program offerings and experiential learning opportunities.

Under direct supervision, incumbents continue to receive training in performing the full range of duties in an assigned program area such as hunter or boating safety, environmental or aquatic education or other assigned program. Progression to the next level may occur upon meeting minimum qualifications and with the recommendation of the appointing authority.

The incumbent will recruit and onboard agency volunteers who will assist with agency projects across all divisions. Duties will include manage regional Volunteer Program budget (includes grant funds and reporting), coordination with project managers to ensure that volunteer hours and milage for federal aid reporting are sufficient to meet project needs, ensure volunteers are properly registered and documentation is complete, and training is provided. The coordinator will ensure volunteer hours are properly documented and time reporting conforms to Federal reporting standards. The incumbent also will collect and input volunteer data and prepare reports as needed. The volunteer coordinator will be present at work projects to increase likelihood the volunteer timesheets and forms are properly collected and entered in the database. Incumbent will train and guide project leads and biologists on volunteer activities for project without the coordinator but has volunteers. Coordinator will assist education program coordinators in the recruitment and training of volunteer instructors.

The incumbent will assist with agency outreach efforts by researching and writing news releases, public presentations and informational workshops, representing the agency at special events, and responding to public inquiry.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, journalism, communications, outdoor recreation/leadership/education, wildlife management, biology or related field and one year of professional experience in conservation education which included presenting educational programs, preparing educational plans, writing news releases, developing written materials for publication, and/or preparing and presenting radio and television broadcasts; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Conservation Educator I in Nevada State service.
