To use Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology to perform increasingly more difficult conceptual design layouts and to prepare and maintain construction plans and engineering-related drawings, 3D laser scan extractions, 3D/BIM models, and sketches in the discipline of electrical and instrumentation design. JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of a Supervising Designer and the technical direction of Project Designers and Engineers, the incumbent operates CAD Microstation software to produce and edit electrical engineering plans, sections and associated electrical and instrumentation diagrams for Districts facilities; modifies drawings and 3D models to incorporate design changes; solves mathematical problems to accurately complete the drawings using the software to retrieve, edit, and display design information; drafts preliminary and final plans for review by engineering staff, drafts profiles and detailed drawings from various notes, sketches, descriptions or other sources utilizing CAD systems; makes material takeoffs; perform field inspections to resolve design problems; prepare layouts of existing conditions utilizing in-house record drawings and CAD files; calculate grade and stationing of proposed duct bank alignments; and performs various technical drafting functions and related duties as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver license; -AND-
For DESIGNER II
: three years of experience performing duties equivalent to a Designer I; completion of related courses from an accredited college or university in Engineering Design Drafting or GIS may be substituted for the required experience where 12 semester units is equivalent to one year of experience and a maximum of 18 semester units may be substituted for 1.5 years of experience. For DESIGNER III
: two years of Districts' experience performing the duties of a Designer II -OR-
Five years of outside experience performing advanced level design work.DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Verifiable experience in preparing electrical and instrumentation contract drawings; creating field sketches; application of National Electrical Code; and the understanding of basic electrical theory.EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The competitive selection process may cover a knowledge of : Principles of engineering design, including plan checking; principles and uses of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and technical drawing; nomenclature, symbols, techniques and instruments used in engineering design and layout; verification of drawings for as-built field conditions, understanding of field surveys; construction practices and materials; and knowledge of building and engineering codes in the assigned area of specialization. The ability to: Perform increasingly more advanced CAD work and basic conceptual design layout for segments of engineering design projects; make complex technical calculations; perform material take-offs and assist in cost estimates; translate verbal ideas and sketches into preliminary through final drawings and engineering plans. The DESIGNER III
level may cover a knowledge of : Advanced principles of engineering design; advanced techniques, methods and equipment used in specialized design and layout; structural/architectural, civil, mechanical, and or electrical systems, principles of sanitary landfill, sewer system and treatment plant construction; engineering principles and calculations used in the applicable discipline; engineering mathematics; and all applicable building and engineering codes in the assigned area of specialization.
