About the Position
The primary function of this position is to provide technical evaluation and review of civil design and construction plans for private development, commercial, subdivision and single family residential and public utility projects. The incumbent ensures the completeness, accuracy and conformance with city codes, Design Standards and Policy Manuals and Supplements to MAG.

Selection Process:
Applicants whose education, training and experience most closely meet the needs of the position may be invited to participate in a selection process to include a panel interview and an assessment exercise. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include:
  • Fingerprinting
  • Criminal Background screening for the past 7 years

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or closely related fields.
  • Two years of experience in construction plan review specific to the job assignment or discipline.
  • An equivalent combination of education and job related experience may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements:
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on department/section assignment.

Essential Functions

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
  • Reviews projects for compliance with adopted codes and ordinances.
  • Manages the review of project construction documents from initial submittal to approval of final plans.
  • Identifies inadequacies found on construction documents and specifications.
  • Evaluates the suitability of materials and methods of construction for compliance with construction codes.
  • Performs computations in the assessment of code compliance.
  • Participates in the process of reviewing existing codes to resolve issues and accommodate new materials or design concepts.
  • Responds to questions, submitted by the public, related to construction codes and regulations, engineering standards, and City policies and procedures.
  • Considers alternative design criteria and solutions to non-conforming plans.
  • Conducts and attends meetings with developers, owners, architects and engineers.
  • Participates in site visits to evaluate issues, identify potential problems and suggest corrective measures.

  • Most work is performed in a normal City office environment, with occasional work performed outdoors on site moving over rough terrain.
  • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Travel to/from meetings and various locations.
