Tacoma Water is seeking a Solutions Architect to join their Business Services team. This position is responsible for ensuring that Tacoma Water's suite of technology applications (including geospatial, Industrial Controls, supply/yield modelling, hydraulic modelling, and more) is actively managed in alignment with the business strategy of Tacoma Water.

This position will perform critical roles in various stages of project delivery and portfolio management for technology projects that impact Tacoma Water, and will serve as Tacoma Water's representative on various boards and committees that are engaged in the management of Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) and City-wide application and infrastructure architecture to ensure that Tacoma Water's needs are clearly represented.

In this role you will provide strategic guidelines to application maintenance and development teams from the following perspectives: interoperability, performance, scalability, reliability, availability, application lifecycle management, technology risks, and number of instances.

Responsibilities include:
  • Lead the development of Tacoma Water's technology solution architecture
  • Partner in defining the principles to guide solution decisions for the enterprise and participate in the governance activities associated with ensuring compliance
  • Lead and mentor development teams on methodologies, processes and best practices that support Tacoma Water and TPU's Architecture Framework.
  • Work with the manager to define immediate and long term goals, priorities, and operational plan to help ensure alignment with the goals and priorities of Tacoma Water
  • Provide architectural expertise on decisions and priorities regarding Tacoma Water's overall systems architecture
  • Review, advise, and design standard system builds, system options, risks, costs versus benefits and impact on utility business process and objectives
  • Facilitate the establishment and implementation of standards and guidelines that drive the design of technology solutions including architecting and implementing solutions requiring integration of multiple platforms, operating systems and applications across the Tacoma Water
  • Develop and document the framework for integration and implementation for changes to technical standards
  • Provide technical guidance to project teams as appropriate
  • Perform Quality Assurance on active technology projects to ensure adherence with established application architecture framework and standards
  • Lead complex technical project reviews to assess deliverables.
  • Evaluate application designs and integrations to ensure strategies, roadmaps, policies, standards, and practices are properly applied


An equivalent combination to:
  • 5+ years of experience as a Data Architect or senior-level Data Engineer across applications, infrastructure, operational technology, data, technical or cybersecurity, etc.; AND
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field ( or equivalent work experience to substitute for degree on a year-for-year basis )
  • 5+ years of experience as a Data Applications Developer/Engineer or Database Administrator; AND
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field ( or equivalent work experience to substitute for degree on a year-for-year basis )
