The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $873 million and 2,183 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting, ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice.

The OpportunityWe are pursuing a qualified candidate to fill a Sheet Metal Worker position in the Maintenance and Operations Division. The Sheet Metal Worker performs journey-level sheet metal installation, fabrication, assembly and repair work.
Essential Job Functions
Position Responsibilities

Fabricates or repairs such sheet metal articles as roofing, gutters, flashing, louvers, ventilators, ducts, hoods, sinks, steam tables, trays, lockers, shelves, fire doors and metal windows.

Fabricates signs, ducts, vessels, etc., from plastics.

Lays out, cuts, shapes and constructs articles of sheet metal, including black and galvanized iron and steel, tin, copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel.

Transfers patterns from blueprints to metal, using scale, compass, divider, prick punch and other layout tools.

Punches or drills holes for rivets, bolts or metal screws.

Solders, welds and brazes.

Grinds and files seams, joints and rough surfaces; burrs and turns edges.

Maintains tools and equipment.

Supervises apprentices and helpers as needed.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites to transport the necessary tools, equipment, and materials required to perform the job.
Requirements to Qualify

Option I:
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship training program* in sheet metal work of at least four years duration.

- OR -

Option II:
Five years' experience in sheet metal work in the building trades, one year of which must have been at the journey-level.**

A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

3 - Moderate. Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

*Applicants claiming successful completion of an apprenticeship training program must attach a copy of their certificate of successful completion at the time of filing or within fifteen calendar days from the filing of your application. Apprenticeship training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, such as the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for private Post-Secondary and Vocational Education.

**Applicants must clearly describe the various types of work performed, time period of work performed, and various equipment and tools used. Journey level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently. Persons at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.

Our Assessment Process
First, meet our requirements above. After that, our process includes a two-part assessment.

Part 1: A multiple choice test weighted at 80% covering: Building Maintenance, Plans and Drawings, Mechanical Concepts - Basic, Sheet Metal Methods and Concepts, Inspection of Buildings, Drafting, and Safety on the Job.

Part 2: A Sheet Metal Performance Test weighted at 20% which includes drawing a pattern of a fabricated sheet metal item.

Note: The Multiple Choice Test is a standardized test and not subject to review by candidates per Civil Service Rule 7.19.

You must achieve a score of 70% or higher on both parts of the assessment in order to be placed on the Eligible Register.

Eligibility Information
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the assessment will be placed on the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Passing this examination and being placed on the Eligible Register do not guarantee an offer of employment.

Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the Eligible Register accordingly.

No person may compete for this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
