The City of Laguna Beach is now looking to hire enthusiastic candidates for the position of Senior Pool Lifeguard and Pool Lifeguard!

Senior Pool Lifeguard
$15.71 - $18.20 Hourly

This recruitment is open on a continuous basis until a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received. The eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill similar or lower level positions throughout the Recreation Division and the City.

The hours for this position are as follows:
Weekdays: 6:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Weekends: 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Ability to work a weekday schedule and evenings is strongly preferred.

The Position: Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, Pool Lifeguards instruct swim classes, enforce pool rules and regulations during recreational swim periods, enforce rules of safety, prevent accidents, perform rescues of persons in distress, and perform facility clean-up and maintenance at the Laguna Beach High School pool facility. Also performs related duties as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator.

The appointing hiring authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions.
Candidates selected for hire who are under the age of 18 must have a work permit (see link below). A work permit is not needed to participate in the interview or swim test.
Work Permit
A candidate selected for this position must successfully complete a police background check and a live-scan fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs duties of lifeguarding at the pool
  • Supervises and assists with instructional programs
  • Performs facility clean up and maintenance
  • Performs locker room supervision
  • Maintains records and licenses for learn-to-swim program
  • Plans and conducts trainings
  • Assists Recreation Coordinator with planning and implementing programs, special events, etc.
  • Performs customer services and assists with recreation class registration
  • Collects fees, sells pool passes and maintains related records
  • Other duties as assigned to assist the supervisor or other facility personnel

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified applicants must be at least 15 years of age. Applicants under the age of 18 must have a work permit.

License/Certificate Requirements: A current American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding is required. Certification is not required to apply but must be obtained before starting.

Experience: Experience as a pool lifeguard/swim instructor, advanced swimming ability, and prior public contact work experience including working with children is desirable.

Qualified applicants will be at least 18 years of age.

License/Certificate Requirements: A current American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding is required. Certification is not required to apply but must be obtained before starting.

A Water Safety Instructor Certification is desirable. Recertification training is available; however, it is preferred that all certifications be current.

Experience: A minimum of one summer season, or the equivalent, as a pool lifeguard/swim instructor is required. Advanced swimming ability, public contact work experience, including working with children is also required.
