Salary Range: $4,691.00/month to $6,683.00/month. PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $4,691.00/month to $5,687.00/month.

About the Position

Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Life and Leadership Programs, the Student Life Advisor for Cultural Clubs & Fraternity/Sorority Life is responsible for advising student clubs/organizations and developing comprehensive student life and leadership events and programs designed to increase campus life and develop student leadership skills. Duties include developing, advising and supervising student clubs and organizations (including but not limited to cultural clubs/organizations, fraternities, and sororities); facilitating the ongoing recognition, renewal and maintenance of student clubs and organizations; assisting with the coordination of a variety of cultural, social, and fraternity/sorority programs to support campus life; assisting with planning and coordinating campus life events including but not limited to Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD), Sexual Assault Awareness, Hazing Education, Homecoming events, and Welcome Week activities; planning and coordinating a variety of leadership activities; and contributing actively to the planning, implementation and evaluation of the overall student leadership development programs. In addition, this position tracks and maintains club/organization information relevant to monthly department and Clery reporting requirements; also uses extensive communications knowledge regarding web page design, social media, and new technology. The Student Life Advisor for Cultural Clubs & Fraternity/Sorority Life provides lead work direction to several student program assistants.


Develop, advise and oversee student clubs and organizations
  • Facilitate the ongoing advising, recognition, renewal and maintenance of student clubs and organizations in the cultural and fraternity/sorority categories
  • Maintain Fraternity/Sorority and cultural club/organization records, including but not limited to recognition renewal documentation, membership rosters, and grade checks
  • Plan and coordinate campus life events in coordination with cultural student clubs and organizations, fraternities and sororities
  • Provide administrative support for student leaders (recognition/renewal, program/event planning forms, risk/liability forms, grade checks/academic monitoring, managing club funds, and recruitment)
  • Work with club/organization leaders to manage budgets including monitoring and reporting expenditures and fundraising revenue.
  • Contribute to the publication and maintenance of the Club & Organization Guidebook, Advisor Guidebook, Fraternity/Sorority Handbook, and related club/organization forms and resource documents
  • Take major responsibility for managing the maintenance of cultural clubs/organizations and fraternity/sorority online presence, including maintaining updated web pages, Bay Sync portals, and managing/monitoring social networking pages.

Support and assist the department with a variety of leadership activities
  • Contribute actively to the planning, implementation and evaluation of the overall student leadership development program, including the Annual Fall Student Leadership Conference, leadership workshops; and the annual Leadership Awards program
  • Incorporate the following student development themes into programs and services whenever feasible: self-concept, social responsibility, financial responsibility, safety and wellness, and cross-cultural awareness
  • Participate in the leadership mission through conducting presentations, facilitating workshops and participating in leadership training and retreats.

Support the planning of a variety of student life events and programs
  • Assist with planning and coordination of campus life events, including but not limited to Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD) Awareness, Sexual Assault Awareness, Hazing Education, Homecoming and Welcome Week activities.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of campus life goals and programs within Student Life and Leadership.
  • Work closely with other Student Affairs Division professionals and university staff. Participate in regular staff meetings, serve as member of various work groups and committees and represent the Student Life and Leadership at university functions and on university committees, as required.

Support program evaluation and department reporting efforts
  • Assist student leaders with developing co-curricular program evaluation tools for campus life and leadership programs
  • Assist student clubs and organization leaders with developing programmatic assessment and evaluation tools
  • Submit club/organization activity reports as requested

Maintain web pages and social networking sites
  • Use knowledge of communications and technology to provide guidance regarding webpage design, updates, social networking, and new technology.

Required Qualifications
  • General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends in the field of Student Affairs.
  • General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends in Student Leadership Programs.
  • Understanding of the principles of individual and group behavior and basic counseling techniques.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Experience in student affairs and/or related field(s).
  • Experience and ability to work with a diverse student and campus population.
  • Experience advising and developing fraternities and sororities.
  • Experience advising and supporting cultural student clubs and organizations.
  • Ability to interpret federal, state, and university policies and procedures regarding student conduct, hazing, and drug and alcohol use.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and through the use of various technologies including the web and social networking platforms.
  • Ability to work with web-based programs and applications for communication, data gathering and analysis.
  • Ability to establish a cooperative working relationship with students, student organizations, campus departments, and the public.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects with multiple deadlines and objectives.
  • Ability to produce extremely visible programs with political sensitivity.
  • Ability to work with constant interruptions in a somewhat noisy environment.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Knowledge of social networking trends and related computer skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Minimum Qualifications


Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.


Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge
  • One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required
  • Two-years of experience in campus life, student leadership, advising, or student support services is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of student leadership development issues including policies, procedures and practices to produce educationally and philosophically sound programs.
  • Working knowledge of student development theory and research.
  • Ability to research and apply research in related topics.
  • Ability to employ positive advisement and counseling skills.
  • Ability to communicate (verbal and written) effectively with a variety of on-and off-campus constituents.
  • Ability to design and update electronic media including those that are web based and/or use internet technology
  • Ability to act and use excellent judgment in a fast paced, service-oriented daily operation.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment.
