VETERANS BENEFITS COORDINATOR
Administrative Support Coordinator I
Veterans Resource Center

Salary Range: $3,064 - $5,148/Monthly

Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; non-exempt classification.

Essential Functions: Under the direct supervision of the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) Director, the Veterans Benefits Coordinator will provide student and administrative support. The incumbent will provide information to prospective and current military connected students and assist the School Certifying Official (SCO) in the certification process of federal, state, and local education benefits. The incumbent will coordinate with the Office of Admissions and Recruitment in assisting prospective student veterans with the admission process and the veteran's admission exception program; the SCO to ensure U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) education benefits are processed; and the clerical and administrative support functions of the VRC. The incumbent will provide administrative support for the completion of programs and projects, including but not limited to transition workshops; educational programming; faculty/staff training; Veterans Day Ceremony; Veterans Graduation Dinner; transfer student veterans orientation; preadmission presentations; community college recruiting events; and military education fairs; planning and coordination of VRC schedules for the staff and student assistants, including training and professional development activities; provide training for VRC staff on changes in federal and state regulations for military connected student educational benefits; make recommendations for successful policy implementation within the campus and VRC, as needed; assist students who are called to active duty, working with faculty and staff to ensure they transition back after their service including, leave of absences, refund of tuition/fees, financial aid issues, course rescheduling, etc.; in the reconciliation of charges for education benefits in conjunction with the Cashier's Office, VA, and CalVet; work with the Cashier's Office to ensure proper reconciliation on all bills presented to the campus from the VA and will assist in ensuring that the monies provided for tuition are credited to the correct student accounts; assist the VRC Director with gathering, analyzing, and reporting data about prospective and current military-connected students; compile reports based on information gathered as required by the VRC Director, Office of Institutional Effectiveness, CSU Chancellor's Office, or governmental agencies; enable certification of VA and CalVet education benefits under supervision of the VRC Director; attend appropriate training from federal and state benefit agencies; serve as primary contact for VA and CalVet eligible students; assist in scheduling and supervising VA work-study student; interpret policies and procedures; provide training in standard office procedures and coordinate and work with individuals at all levels within the university.
Required Qualifications & Experience: Equivalent to three years of general office experience, which includes providing ongoing work coordination and/or lead responsibilities with notable accountability for the work results of support staff or unit administrative function. The incumbent must have thorough, detailed knowledge of applicable university infrastructure, policies, and procedures; and budget policies and procedures, and standard business math. The incumbent must have excellent writing and communication skills. The incumbent must have the ability to work independently and prioritize multiple projects; draft and compose correspondence and standard reports; and handle a broad range of interpersonal contacts, including those at a higher level or sensitive in nature. The incumbent must have a demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered.

Desired Qualifications: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year accredited college or university. Experience with and/or knowledge of VA and CalVet benefit programs. Knowledge of CSU and Cal State LA policies, procedures, and regulations. Understands the needs of military veterans, especially those in higher education. Demonstrated time management skills, ability to work independently, and a proven team member that can accomplish multiple tasks or projects. Prior military service is preferred.
