Position Summary

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of the academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure and human resources at San Diego State University (SDSU).

The SDSU Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing services and facilities for over 6,000 students. This includes the operation of residence halls and apartments, off-campus housing and conference housing. Housing Administration supports the educational mission of the Residential Education Office (REO) while providing the business operations for all housing related functions in support of a quality environment to enhance the student's educational experience. The OHA staff consists of approximately 25 employees and generates annual revenues of nearly $75,000,000.

The Marketing Assistant is a member of the Office of Housing Administration (OHA) team. In conjunction with the Executive Director, Associate Directors and other managers, staff, and student assistants, this position assists in carrying out the mission and vision of SDSU Housing and is responsible for supporting and contributing to a positive atmosphere that facilitates respect, inclusivity and collaboration.

Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Director for Marketing, Communications, Outreach & Assessment, the Marketing Assistant serves as a member of the OHA team, sharing responsibility for serving an on-campus housing program. This position assists in providing general marketing support to the OHA and Residential Education Office (REO) staff and supports marketing and outreach functions such as assisting with social media, communications, marketing, special event coordination, and completes other related duties and assignments.

This is a full time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic marketing and communications principles

  • Demonstrated graphic design skills in Adobe Illustrator, In-Design, Lightroom and Photoshop

  • Experience using Sprout Social media management tool

  • Experience using Canto digital asset management tool

  • Experience using OmniUpdate website content management tool

  • Experience using Mailchimp email campaign management tool

  • Experience using Spinetix digital display tool

Specialized Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation; demonstrated ability to proofread and edit.
  • Knowledge of relevant marketing tools and applications

  • Ability to learn a variety of department and campus specific programs

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines

  • Ability to apply independent judgment, discretion and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and, at times, creative solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively learn, interpret, apply, and communicate established department policies, procedures, and information

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications within a diverse population, strong listening and interpretive skills, and the ability to deal positively with unexpected developments and diverse perspectives in and outside the university

  • Ability to maintain high quality/standards of work, ethics, commitment, and professional responsibility

  • Thorough knowledge of office methods, procedures, and practices. Working knowledge of office equipment, including multi-line telephones, copy/scan, and FAX machines.

  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including microsoft suite, google suite, adobe suite, databases as well as online calendaring and email

  • Must have the ability to work in a high traffic area and maintain a high tolerance for frequent interruptions and distractions

  • Have the ability to stick to timelines and meet deadlines while producing precise, high-quality work

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development

  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called in periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,011 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,923 - $5,283 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work.
