The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. The salary range for this classification is $4,372 to $10,792 per month.

Position Information

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a User Experience Designer to be responsible for shepherding innovation projects from ideation to implementation by identifying requirements, designing user interfaces, and visualizing and developing potential solutions. The person in this role collaborates with the director of innovation, technical staff, and users to define and implement simple, intuitive, and delightful solutions for products, services, and processes.


Under the general direction of the Director for Innovation, the User Experience Designer will:

-Collaborate with project teams to plan, design, and develop innovative projects and advocates for universal design and user experience perspectives.

-Lead brainstorming sessions and gives presentations to drive design, demonstrating features and flows.

-Participate in decisions about design and technology platforms.

-Support the evaluation of third-party solutions for usability.

-Design and present UX/UI solutions in presentations.

-Serve as a subject matter expert in user interface design for web and multimedia projects

-Conduct needs assessments and user research, including interviews, surveys, focus groups, and data collection.

-Create sketches, proofs, prototypes, mock-ups, wireframes, user journey maps, and other visual aids to support the development of innovation projects and efforts.

-Implement interaction designs in well-formed HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

-Evaluate the efficacy of prototypes and projects through usability testing and feedback collection.

-Iterate on designs based on user feedback.

-Ensure the compatibility of applications for responsiveness.

-Prepare documentation and reports.

-Design presentation and communication templates for promotional, developmental, and administrative needs.

-Maintain and update ITS Innovation websites and project websites.

-Conduct accessibility testing in accordance with Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act and the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and analyzes results.

-Contribute to the group's shared knowledge of user-centered design and research methodologies.

-Research and monitor trends in emerging technologies.


This position requires:

-A bachelor's degree in any field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

-Requires 2+ years' experience in an area such as user experience, graphic design, front-end design, product management, or similar.

-Proficient in industry tools such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Visio, Project, Excel, and PowerPoint required.

-Expertise in web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and fluent in universal design principles required.

-Fluency in coding languages such as Java, Perl, HTML, CSS, and XML/XSL is desirable.

-Fluency in best practices for web-based information architecture and design is desirable.

-Ability to understand and respond to data (metric tests, usability studies) and uses that to inform future design required.

-Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills in both written and visual forms are required.

-Able to develop and nurture relationships across teams and disciplines to promote collaboration and efficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

-Advanced degree or certification in a related field (design thinking, user experience, universal design) preferred.

-Knowledge and understanding of web and mobile platforms and experience in end-to-end design preferred.

-Experience working in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team and collaborating directly with developers for the implementation of designs preferred.
