The Department of English offers its diverse students courses in literature, creative writing, linguistics, and composition. The B.A. in English fosters understanding and appreciation of U. S. and global literature in English, with emphasis on works by and about ethnic and cultural minorities and women; the history, structure, and socio-cultural aspects of the English language; the aims and processes of creative and critical writing. Our general education offerings focus on themes of diversity, social justice, and environmental justice in literature, creative writing, and composition. In online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses, faculty use innovative pedagogy to help students develop the advanced skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking necessary for successful careers and engagement in civic life. The M.A. in TESOL prepares students to teach adult-language learners and enrolls students from around the globe. Our 9 full-time and 25 part-time faculty are dedicated teachers, engaged scholars, acclaimed writers, and social activists in our communities. Our students take part in student literary magazines, visiting writers' series, and departmental literary contests.

The successful candidate will collaborate with campus-wide stakeholders, including programs such as the Office of Faculty Development, the Student Center for Academic Achievement, the Office of General Education, and individual academic departments to promote writing in our general education and discipline-specific courses. Building on current writing initiatives, the candidate will lead the development of a sustainable WAC program and assist with University-wide implementation and assessment of the graduation writing requirement mandated by the California State University Chancellor's Office.
While responsibilities during the first two years will be dominated by the creation of a new WAC program, teaching duties will increase as time allows. The successful candidate also will teach undergraduate courses in composition and writing pedagogy, as well as work with the department's director of composition to support more than 20 lecturers in composition. We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and research engages with race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and ability status and who are prepared to develop and teach writing courses that address interdisciplinary themes of racial/ethnic issues.
As a faculty member in the Department of English, the person hired for this position is expected to sustain a record of scholarly or creative work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, assume campus-wide committee responsibilities, and engage actively in our communities. The Department of English seeks a teacher/scholar/activist with experience in the theory and practice of writing across the curriculum. Earned Ph.D. in English or closely related field is required by the start of fall semester 2022. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of innovative pedagogy related to racial/ethnic equity and inclusion and social justice, and provide evidence of teaching effectiveness. Candidates must demonstrate a record of scholarship (including dissertation) pertaining to composition, rhetoric, or writing across the curriculum. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in faculty development and writing across the curriculum program development and assessment. Candidates should have secondary interests in teaching general education courses, composition/writing studies, rhetoric, sociolinguistics, multilingualism, or social justice pedagogy. Candidates should demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
