Afterschool Recreation Assistant

(Casual Recreation Assistant; Job Code 9325)

Note: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in assisting with supervising youth groups in elementary, middle school and high school programs. Currently there are vacancies in our Youth and Teens work unit primarily responsible for community events, school year and summer youth programs.
Essential Job Functions
( May include, but are not limited to the following )
  • Assist with supervising a group of youth in school day and after school programs, holiday camps and special events (openings for elementary, middle school and high school programs);
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and leading recreation activities including arts and crafts, sports and games;
  • Be flexible and able to respond to change;
  • Take attendance and assist with record-keeping;
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment;
  • Attend staff meetings and program planning dates;
  • Issue, maintain and store equipment and supplies;
  • Interact with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers, School District and City staff;
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants.

Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work- related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper, books and documents weighing up to 10 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum age: 16 years old (Students under 18 must obtain a Student Work Permit prior to employment);
  • Paid or volunteer experience with youth or recreation programs is desirable;
  • Ideal candidate is available to work varying hours Monday through Friday between 2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record or the ability to provide alternative transportation as approved by the appointing authority.
