This recruitment is to create a candidate pool to fill hourly Maintenance Aide vacancies within the coming months. Positions may be staffed in any Public Works Operations & Maintenance Division, such as Right of Way, Facilities, Traffic Safety, Parks/Street Trees, etc.
Hourly positions are temporary, limited-term, with a cap of 2,000 hours, per agency rules. Positions can be either full or part-time, depending on Division needs.

Under supervision, to perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in the routine operation of public facilities; to operate Type C power driven equipment; to perform related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is a trainee position in the maintenance series of classifications. After appropriate training and experience, the Maintenance Aide could reasonably expect to be promoted to Maintenance Worker unless a permanent Maintenance Aide position has been established. Typical Duties:
- Perform heavy routine manual labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, buildings, parks, recreation areas and other municipal facilities; *
- Load and unload material; *
- Excavate and backfill trenches with appropriate hand tools; *
- Clean gutters, drains and culverts; *
- Rake leaves, clean grounds and assist in spraying; *
- Cut weeds, clear brush and trim trees; *
- Operate, clean and maintain basic tools and equipment used on the job; *
- May drive dump truck and other similar Type C power driven equipment;
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Type C equipment includes pick-up truck, 1-ton dump truck, 1-ton flatbed truck, water truck (without trailer), riding lawnmowers, and chipper equipment used with the chip truck. Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment:
While performing the duties of the job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of : Use, maintenance and application of basic hand tools; safe work practices.
Ability to : Perform heavy manual labor; maintain and establish cooperative working relationships; understand and carry out oral and written directions; read and write at the level necessary to perform the above. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Experience/Education : Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Requirement : Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License. If permanently assigned to Tree Maintenance:
Perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in tree maintenance; this includes heavy routine manual labor in the maintenance of trees. Desired Qualifications:
Some paid experience in manual labor preferred. If permanently assigned to Tree Maintenance:
Some paid experience in the maintenance of trees.
