Lifeguard/Aquatic Safety Instructors teach water safety, swimming, diving, and other aquatics classes to the public and perform all Lifeguard job functions. Click here to view a complete copy of the job description and list of required certifications. How many hours will you work each week?
That depends on your availability and where we need you to work. There is no guarantee to a certain number of hours each week, but part-time hourly employees may work up to 19 hours per week year-round and up to 40+ hours per week when working during the summer. Aquatic facilities and pools are open 6 to 7 days per week, so you may be scheduled to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Where will you work?
Work locations and assignments are subject to change and are based on department needs. You may be required to work at different aquatic facilities or pools within the same work day or work week. Although you don't need a driver's license to be a lifeguard, you must have regular and reliable transportation to get to your assigned work location. If hired, you will be required to wear a face covering while at work and follow all City of Henderson COVID-19 safety policies, procedures, and practices like social distancing, washing your hands, and sanitizing work areas. Program participants and patrons visiting our centers must also comply with all COVID-19 safety rules and state directives in order to use our facilities and participate in programs.
If you have American Red Cross or Starfish Aquatics Institute Lifeguard certifications you will be required to attend a course provided by the City to transition your certifications to American Health & Safety Institute and StarGuard ELITE ® Lifeguard Certification prior to beginning work as a Lifeguard. Applicants invited to interview must successfully complete the following prerequisite swim test in order to move forward in the hiring process:
- 50-yard continuous swim with head above water (unassisted)
- 50-yard continuous swim with head above water (assisted with rescue tube)
- 1-minute water tread (without use of hands or arms)
- Retrieval of 10-pound object from 7 - 13 feet of water depth

- You must be 16 years of age at the time of application or hire.

- Starfish Swim Instructor (SSI) Certification
- American Safety & Health Institute (or American Red Cross) Basic First Aid
- American Safety & Health Institute (or American Red Cross) Bloodborne Pathogens
- American Safety & Health Institute (or American Red Cross) CPR Pro for the Professional Rescuer®
- American Safety & Health Institute (or American Red Cross) Emergency Oxygen
