The Position

Portland Parks and Recreation is looking for Recreation Aide - Sports Leagues Casual Staff to join their team!

Position Description:
The Recreation Aide - Sports League Staff is responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of each participant enrolled in the program. Applicants must demonstrate leadership, show active participation and enthusiasm on the court or field while serving as a positive role model to all participants and other staff. This position is utilized for our Youth Sports Leagues that are a function of the Sports Office. Examples of these leagues include Saturday Youth Volleyball and Saturday Goldenball programs.

This is a part-time position with flexible hours and may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work hours can be assigned verbally and depend on enrollment levels, needs of the program, and other factors. There is no guarantee of the number of hours needed each week nor the number of hours worked from week to week. Employees in this position serve at will.

Portland Parks & Recreation is hiring for the following positions:
  • Sports League Level I - Gym Host (Age 18 & Over)
  • Sports League Level II- League Assistant/Roamer (Age 18 & Over)
  • Sports League Level III- Lead Assigning Official (Age 18 & Over)
  • Sports League Level IV- Official (Age 15 & Over)

WAGE RANGES:
Sports League Staff- Level I: $14.15-$15.40
Sports League Staff- Level II: $16.25-$17.25
Sports League Staff- Level III: $16.75-$19.50
Sports League Staff: Level IV: $25.00-$30.00
  • Youth Volleyball - $25.00
  • Youth Basketball- $25.00 3rd-8th grade - $30.00 high school

  3. Demonstrated ability in the sport being supported
  4. Strong people and customer service skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with staff and diverse groups of people.
  5. Ability to represent Portland Parks & Recreation in a professional manner.
  6. Ability to arrive on time at your assigned location. Flexibility in traveling to various gyms throughout the city.
  7. Ability to work with diverse populations.

  3. Ability to maintain composure in difficult situations and a fast-paced environment.

Sports League Level I - Gym Host (Age 18 & Over)The Recreation Aide - Sports League Staff Gym Host is responsible for providing a safe and positive gym environment for the participants enrolled in the program as well as for spectators, volunteer coaches and other staff. Applicants must demonstrate customer service, leadership, ability to deal with difficult situations as they may arise. Must be able to handle conflicts and respond to quick situations and/or customer concerns. The gym host is responsible for greeting teams and spectators, training adults to use score clock, signing in officials and recording scores and any incidents at the end of each game.
Duties & Responsibilities - Gym Host
  • Strong people and customer service skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with staff and public.
  • Work independently or with a partner/s.
  • Inspect assigned gym location for cleanliness, safety for players and spectators and in some cases the specific sporting equipment.
  • Ability to display positive, encouraging, upbeat attitude at all times.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Maintain excellent communication with all staff and customers through verbal, electronic and written means.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follow all Portland Parks & Recreation rules, policies and procedures.
  • Support sporting events, games, or competitions by maintaining standards or play and ensuring that game and league rules are observed.

Sports League Level II- League Assistant/Roamer (Age 18 & Over)The Recreation Aide- Sports league Assistant or Roamer is responsible for assisting the sports department in staff and game day check-ins. Providing equipment, breaks, possible fill in at an assigned gym, knowledge of league rules. Must be able to train a gym host on set-up and take down if deemed necessary. Provides excellent customer service in working with staff, coaches, parents, and players. Must have the ability to set-up and take down at the assigned sports venue. Must be able to travel from site to site of the assigned area.

Sports League Level III- Lead Assigning Official (Age 18 & Over)The Recreation Aide - Lead Assigning Official is responsible for planning, coordinating, and running the new officials on-court trainings. Knowledge of current league rules as well as national high school federation rules. Has a high level of expertise in evaluating officials as well as scheduling officials to assigned league games. Must be able to handle conflicts, cancelations and respond to quick game day situations. Lead assigning official must be able to provide excellent customer service while working with staff, coaches, parents, and players. This position requires traveling to trainings, staff meetings and game sites.

Sports League Level IV- Official (Age 15 & Over)The Recreation Aide - Sports League Official is responsible for ensuring game safety and knowledge of the specific sport rules and supplemental rules as provided by Portland Parks and Recreation. Must be able to do a minimum of 3 assigned games per Saturday during the assigned season. Be able to communicate effectively with our lead assigner staff, gym host and the public. Show active participation and enthusiasm on the court while serving as a positive role model to all participants and other staff.
Duties & Responsibilities - Youth Sports Official (Basketball or Volleyball)
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Arrive in proper official uniform and in a timely manner for pre-game meeting, player inspection and reading of pledge cards.
  • Enforce and explain the rules and regulations governing the specific sport.
  • Work independently or with a partner/s.
  • Ability to maintain composure in difficult situations and a fast-paced environment.
  • Communicate effectively with the lead assigning officials through email or phone.
  • Ability to check emails and create an account on the Officials Scheduling Software; Reftown.
