Position Description

Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.

This position is located within Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (NNAMHS) at Dini Townsend Hospital in Sparks, Nevada. The incumbent will provide education and leadership while supervising the daily activities, group presentations, and therapeutic interactions of front line Registered Nurse and Mental Health Technician staff to ensure a comprehensive treatment program for adults with severe mental illness in an inpatient setting; collaborate with community referral sources to ensure timely acceptance of patients for care; provide direct nursing care as needed; and perform first line hospital administrative duties during after-hours periods and/or when senior administrative staff are not present. This position may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.

The Psychiatric Nurse 3 functions as a first-line supervisors who trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of assigned staff; assigns and reviews work; and initiates disciplinary action. The incumbent will provide for and supervise others in the care of mentally ill adult consumers in an inpatient setting; will collaborate with community referral sources to ensure timely acceptance of patients for care; and provides first line hospital administrative duties during afterhours periods and/or when senior administrative staffs are not present in the inpatient setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and three years of professional nursing experience, two of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities; OR one year of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse 2 in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

  • A Bachelor's degree from an approved school of professional nursing, pursuant to NRS 632, is equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
