Position Description

Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) is recruiting for 2 Psychiatric Nurse positions. One vacancy is located at our Desert Regional Center (DRC) in Las Vegas and the other position is at Rural Regional Center (RRC) in Mesquite or Pahrump. This is a very rewarding and specialized field of nursing working with individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Disability.

Psychiatric Nurses (PN) provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The DRC PN II participates in the overall quality assurance and performance improvement activities for the Community Services, as well as the ICF/IID programs. This includes participation in the quality oversight of contracted community providers, conducting and participating in the environmental reviews of supported living arrangements, the ICF/IID, and Jobs and Day Training Sites, conducting investigations of allegations of abuse, neglect and exploitation, complete thorough and comprehensive health care assessments and develop detailed report of findings including recommendations for health care supports.

The RRC PN II is a Nevada licensed RN who conducts nursing assessments of persons with intellectual and other developmental disabilities; consults with persons served, their families, and contracted provider and State professional staff regarding person served health issues; performs basic nursing duties including but not limited to: taking blood pressure, temperature, head circumference, height and weight, and other biometric measurements; provides health and safety related educational presentations to agency and contracted provider staff and persons served; assists with nursing related policy updates and participates in statewide nursing work groups as needed. Overnight and multiple day travel to outlying areas is occasionally required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities; OR one year of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
  • This position may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • A Bachelor's degree from an approved school of professional nursing, pursuant to NRS 632, is equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
