Job Description

Definition
The Adult Crossing Guard assists members of the community by monitoring areas of assignment and keeping them safe. Adult Crossing Guards will monitor student behavior at traffic intersections, escort children across the street when coming and going from school, and assure student safety as they cross.
Examples of Duties
  • Instruct children at designated school crossings to wait at curb for crossing signal or until safe crossing can be made.
  • Stop vehicular traffic.
  • Guide children across streets.
  • Report traffic violations to police.
  • Report suspicious persons and loiterers in the vicinity of intersections or school areas.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Be physically able to properly perform duties.
  • Be able to work outdoors for up to 20 hours per week, Monday-Friday.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment fingerprint scan and a background check.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination.

Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school children, parents, school personnel and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively and speak clearly for others comprehension.
  • Recognize traffic hazards and act quickly in emergencies.
  • Follow written and oral instructions with minimal supervision.

Experience and Education
  • Experience working with children preferred but not required.
  • Training and experience equivalent to the completion of High School.
  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Follow written and oral instructions with minimal supervision.

Special Requirements
Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment: Ability to work in all weather conditions, requires the individual to be in good physical condition with good mobility. Must be able to stand and sit for long periods for time. Reach, squat, lift and carry up to 10 pound repeatedly, up to 25 pounds occasionally. Walk on uneven surfaces, climb curb and medians up to 12 inches in height without assistance.

Retirement Benefits
Federal law requires that employees who are not members of the City retirement plan (CalPERS) be covered under an alternate retirement plan (PARS).

Health Insurance (Not available to most Temporary/Seasonal Employees)
Temporary employees in a non-clerical position hired in the Planning, Engineering and Building Divisions may qualify for participation in CalPERS health, Delta Dental and Vision. (per Res. 7062) o Multiple plans available through CalPERS Health; plans with Kaiser rate or lower are paid by the City.

*Temporary/Seasonal employees are limited to work no more than 1000 hours per Fiscal Year.
