Position Summary

Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (StratComm) serves as the official voice of San Diego State University and shares the President's vision, values and priorities while articulating a unified message about the university's unique story. The department develops and oversees content for SDSU's main web pages and also for SDSU NewsCenter, flagship social media channels, video productions, photography, and the SDSU Magazine.

StratComm is seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as a Managing Editor and Content Strategist (Administrator I), a core team member who will assist in engaging key audiences and enhancing SDSU's reputation.

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Managing Editor and Content Strategist leads editorial strategy and manages the daily, weekly, monthly, and long-lead story lineup, publishing schedule, and deadlines for the university's news site NewsCenter. Working with several members of the StratComm team and campus communications partners in various divisions, colleges, auxiliaries, and other units, the incumbent is responsible for curating and repurposing previously developed content for other institutional communication vehicles for NewsCenter, and also for coordinating copy and photos.

The Managing Editor and Content Strategist serves as the lead coordinator with campus communications partners and manages weekly editorial planning with this group. The incumbent will lead the weekly Content Planning Meeting for campus communicators and periodically present during team, committee, and other meetings on best practices as they pertain to writing and communications.

The Managing Editor and Content Strategist will co-manage communications leads housed in the College of Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the College of Health and Human Services (through a dotted line to their colleges).

In addition, the Managing Editor and Content Strategist will write, edit and proofread content for NewsCenter, as well as contribute to SDSU Magazine, strategic communications plans, and other projects as needed. They will also provide support for media relations.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience - especially as an editor, writer, or communications specialist curating clean and compelling editorial content
  • Demonstrated experience with establishing and managing editorial workflow calendars and adhering to deadlines
  • Experience publishing digital content through a content management system (CMS)
  • Experience assigning and coordinating editorial copy and photographs
  • Experience supervising and directing the work of others


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge of the SDSU campus, its faculty, staff, students, and key programs
  • Proficiency in PhotoShop/cropping photos
  • Thorough understanding of AP Style and willingness to learn and follow the SDSU Style Guide

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
