Johnson County Public Works is looking for qualified applicants to fill the Sign Technician position and join the Road Maintenance team! The job duties of the Sign Technician may include the following:
- Maintains and installs signs and pavement markings in unincorporated Johnson County; reads and interprets complex plans and specifications; calculates the quantity of materials needed to complete the job; prepares and maintains correspondence, records, and reports; communicates with the general public on issues; mentors and trains co-workers on signing and striping procedures; completes work independently with indirect supervision; follows the guidelines of the Municipal Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and works with engineering staff to ensure compliance with the MUTCD and other guidelines; completes a variety of road maintenance work activities to back-up and support road maintenance functions and staff.
- Performs various tasks requiring equipment, vehicle, and tool operation; performs pre-trip inspections of trucks and equipment; executes field maintenance activities required to operate the equipment; uses a variety of small and large tools and operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy duty road maintenance and construction equipment and attachments; performs general maintenance and minor repairs of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment.
- Performs a variety of activities during emergency response which may include sign repair, closing roads, addressing flood issues, and plowing and sanding activities for snow events.
- Performs roadside vegetation management using herbicides including loading, mixing, calibrating, and manual application.
To be eligible for consideration as a Sign Technician Trainee
position, the candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent, five (5) years of experience on construction projects such as roads and bridges, and a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Vo-Tech certification/degree in Agriculture, Automotive or Construction Technology, or other related fields of study, and working knowledge of the MUTCD and sign fabrication, installation, and repair are preferred. This is a temporary trainee position with a maximum employment duration of three months. Trainees must obtain their Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within three months in order to continue employment as a Sign Technician.

position, the candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent, five (5) years of experience on construction projects such as roads and bridges, a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement, and anacceptable driving record. Vo-Tech certification/degree in Agriculture, Automotive or Construction Technology, or other related fields of study, and working knowledge of the MUTCD and sign fabrication, installation, and repair are preferred.
Both levels of Sign Technician involve excessive standing and/or walking, exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes and/or chemicals, heights, and loud noises and lifting of 50lbs. Physical abilities including mobility, agility, strength, dexterity, balance, coordination, and/or endurance are required. This is a safety-sensitive job requiring response for emergency and afterhours work which will require work when the facility is closed (e.g. holidays, weekends, nights) and overtime as needed.
