Position Summary

The mission of the Information Technology Division is to develop the long-term infrastructure, services, and strategy necessary to support the University's mission of learning, discovery, and engagement. The IT Division has the stewardship responsibility for core IT assets on campus and the obligation to provide the services, training, and community building necessary to realize the benefits of those investments across the San Diego State University community.

IT Infrastructure Operations (ITIO) is responsible for the university's data center infrastructure, cloud infrastructure, virtualization infrastructure, backup infrastructure, Linux and Windows server operating systems administration, Active Directory infrastructure, enterprise endpoint management systems, and Police Department server infrastructure.

As a member of the Active Directory team within the IT Infrastructure Operations department, the Active Directory Engineer is responsible for administering, supporting, and providing continuous improvements to all aspects of the University's enterprise Active Directory and Azure Active Directory infrastructure with a strong emphasis on tiered security.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in operating systems programs, maintenance, and systems administration features is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree, preferably in information technology, computer science, or a related technical field, or equivalent technical training and/or experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Operating Systems Analyst include a working knowledge of the assigned computer operating systems, systems analysis, and systems-level programming.

Specialized Skills
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience supporting a large enterprise Active Directory.
  • Experience supporting a large enterprise hybrid Azure Active Directory.
  • Intermediate skill level in PowerShell scripting.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with varying levels of the organization.
  • Ability to be productive in a team environment and help contribute to a positive team effort.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the Microsoft AD tiered administrative model or enterprise access model.
  • Experience with bulk administration and ability to automate AD tasks.
  • Experience with single sign-on integration with Azure AD, Shibboleth, or a similar enterprise SAML identity provider.
  • Microsoft Azure certification is preferred, but not required.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $7,916 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,372 - $10,792 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
