The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $3,748.00/month to $5,264.00/month.

About the Position

Fulfilling the College of Science's instructional and research missions requires appropriate infrastructure and and a culture of safety. The establishment of this position recognizes the increasing intersection of work between Environmental Health & Safety, Facilities, ITS, and department-based Instructional Support Technicians, Equipment Technicians in supporting these missions. As such, this position will serve as the primary person responsible for safe testing, maintenance, and repair of equipment used in classes and research in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and as a support for that work across the College of Science. This position will partner with Environmental Health & Safety in establishing and implementing policies and procedures that build a strong culture of employee and student safety in compliance with safety regulations as they pertain specifically to College of Science instructional and research activities. Additionally, this position coordinates with Facilities and ITS on equipment installation, maintenance, and construction projects.

Responsibilities

Safe Maintenance, Service, Repair and Usage of Equipment
  • Serves as primary person responsible for safe maintenance, testing, and repair of equipment and instrumentation used in teaching and research laboratories in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge base regarding advances in instrumentation, especially those that may lead to safer operation (e.g. requires smaller volumes of hazardous chemicals or generates less waste.)
  • Assists department-based instructional support staff and equipment technicians in the safe maintenance, testing and repair of equipment used in teaching and research laboratories across the College.
  • Assists faculty and staff with assessing specialized requirements of equipment (e.g. electrical) and the space in it will be housed (e.g. bracing for gas cylinders, appropriate ventilation, etc.) to ensure safe operation.
  • Assists instructional support staff and department equipment technicians in servicing, adjusting, and calibrating mechanical, optical, electronic and other equipment used in teaching and research laboratories across the College.
  • Analyzes problems with equipment to determine what repairs are required.
  • Tracks equipment requests, orders selected items, keeps track of arrivals, and oversees equipment upkeep.

College Liasion to Environmental Health and Safety
  • Leads College of Science Safety Committee and updates to Chemical Hygeine Plan and staff/student training.
  • Assists faculty and staff in completing required training, chemical Inventories, hazard assessments, and inspections in College of Science facilties and addressing issues of non-compliance.
  • Collaborates with Environmental Health & Safety on addressing audit findings and in new initiatives to build a culture of employee and student safety in the College.
  • Facilitates implementation of new research and instructional programs that require new safety protocols in the College.
  • Liases with departments and EH&S in managing hazardous waste disposal and storage procedures and maintaining storage spaces of such waste.

College Liasion to Facilities and Outside Contractors
  • Interfaces with Facilities personnel and outside contractors to facilitate the installation, relocation, service and repair of equipment as necessary.
  • Responsible for, or assists with, the installation and relocation of scientific equipment used in teaching and research laboratories as needed.
  • Maintains and updates space and equipment inventory.
  • Prepares and monitors service requests for the College of Science. Follows up to ensure work is completed satisfactorily.
  • Coordinates lab, classroom, and office renovations and moves with faculty, staff, Facilities, and ITS, as appropriate.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in construction, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of equipment
  • Ability to perform complex troubleshooting
  • Ability to design, fabricate, modify, and repair technical equipment following original or suggested plans
  • Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed
  • Ability to install, place, and maintain a wide variety of equipment
  • Ability to read and write as appropriate to the duties of the position
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations where required
  • Ability to learn software for use with chemical inventories, hazard assessments, and inspections
  • Ability and interest in learning about a wide variety of instruments and equipment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability to use dollies, hand trucks and jacks to move heavy equipment
  • Current knowledge of occupational safety rules
  • Current compressed gas handling training
  • Current California driver's license; completion of the State of California Defensive Driving course
  • Ability to independently run errands on and off campus
  • Be able to climb stairs as needed (not all areas of buildings are served by elevator.)

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent of two years journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of scientific or technical equipment in chemistry and/or biochemistry.

Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment, or related experience in chemistry and/or biochemistry equipment as part of instructional support activities, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training in biological sciences equipment, or completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in chemistry and/or biochemistry equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge
  • Experience working in an educational or scientific industry environment.
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent to graduation from a four-year college/university.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment.
